Key Responsibilities

  • Sets priorities for fire risk mitigation, controlled burns, and fuel management to minimize potential harm while maximizing resource benefits and enhancements.
  • Collaborates with leadership within park units and represents the units and NPS on various interagency teams and workgroups addressing specific local, regional, or national fire management challenges.
  • Addresses complex technical issues related to fire weather, smoke management, fire dynamics, and computational fire modeling.
  • Ensures that the fuel management strategy aligns with ecosystem management principles and land use frameworks.
  • Oversees and manages all aspects of the budget development and execution process, making adjustments as necessary.
  • Directs all components of the moderately complex wildland fire program within the designated park unit.
  • Coordinates unit and group initiatives with various federal, state, and local agencies.
  • Supervises, leads, and organizes subordinate personnel.

Employment Conditions

  • U.S. Citizenship is mandatory.

  • Appointment is contingent upon a background investigation and favorable adjudication.

  • Must be at least 18 years old at the time of application.
  • Must successfully complete the Work Capacity Test for certain Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) or Fire Program Management (FPM) roles.
  • This position is designated for drug testing; a negative drug test result is required prior to appointment, and random testing for illegal drug use will occur.
  • Prior extensive wildland firefighting experience is essential.
  • Willingness to live and work in remote areas is required.
  • A valid driver's license is necessary for operating a government vehicle as part of official duties.
  • Compliance with National Park Service fire uniform standards is mandatory.
  • Availability for on-call duties, including evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work may be required.
  • New employees or supervisors in the Federal government must complete a one-year probationary period.
  • Incumbents must complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Must be determined physically fit by an authorized government physician to perform strenuous duties and pass a medical examination.
  • Periodic medical examinations will be required throughout employment.
  • Frequent extended travel, up to 14 nights per month, particularly during fire season, is expected.
  • This announcement may be utilized to fill additional positions if identical vacancies arise within 90 days.
  • Government housing may be available but is not guaranteed.

Basic Qualification Requirements:

  • Candidates must possess extensive wildland firefighting experience, gained through direct fire line work in containment, control, suppression, or utilization of wildland fire. This experience must be clearly documented in the resume.
  • Completion of the Primary NWCG Core Requirements of: Taskforce Leader (TFLD) AND Incident Commander Type 3 (ICT3) OR Prescribed Burn Boss (RXB2) OR Helibase Manager (HEBM) AND Incident Commander Type 3 (ICT3).

Additional Experience for GS-11 Level:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level or higher in the Federal service, which may include:

  • Reviewing and assessing fire management plans for ecological soundness and alignment with land management goals.
  • Conducting field inspections before and after prescribed or wildland fires to evaluate resource objectives.
  • Analyzing the ecological role of fire and its management strategies.
  • Implementing fire management planning and evaluating objectives in resource management plans.

No educational substitution is permitted for experience at the grade levels specified in this announcement.
