Lead Wildland Fire Management Specialist

Key Responsibilities
- Sets priorities for fire risk mitigation, controlled burns, and fuel management, focusing on reducing potential damage while enhancing multiple resource benefits.
- Engages with park leadership and represents the unit and NPS on various interagency teams and working groups addressing specific fire management challenges at local, regional, or national levels.
- Addresses complex technical issues related to fire weather, smoke management, fire dynamics, and computational fire modeling.
- Ensures that the fuel management program aligns with ecosystem management principles and land use strategies.
- Oversees all aspects of budget planning and execution, making necessary adjustments as required.
- Manages all components of the moderately complex wildland fire program within the designated park unit.
- Coordinates unit and group initiatives with various federal, state, and local agencies.
- Supervises, directs, and organizes subordinate personnel.
Employment Conditions
- U.S. Citizenship is mandatory.
- Males born after December 31, 1959 must be registered for Selective Service or be exempt.
- Appointment is contingent upon a background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- All Federal employees must have federal payments made via direct deposit.
- Applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time of application.
- Successful completion of the Work Capacity Test is required for certain fire management positions.
- This position is designated for drug testing; a negative result is required prior to appointment, with random testing throughout employment.
- Prior experience in primary/rigorous wildland firefighting is essential.
- Willingness to work and reside in remote areas is necessary.
- A valid driver's license is required for operating government vehicles.
- Compliance with National Park Service fire uniform standards is mandatory.
- Availability for on-call duties, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime, is expected.
- New federal employees or supervisors must complete a one-year probationary period.
- Completion of training and maintenance of a government charge card for travel and/or purchasing authority is required.
- Physical fitness must be confirmed by an authorized government physician to perform demanding duties.
- Periodic medical examinations will be required throughout employment.
- Frequent extended travel, up to 14 nights per month, particularly during fire season, is expected.
- This announcement may be utilized to fill additional identical vacancies within a specified timeframe.
- Government housing may be available but is not guaranteed.
Qualifications
To qualify, applicants must meet the requirements outlined below by the closing date of the announcement. For detailed qualification information, please refer to the relevant guidelines.
Basic Qualification Requirements:
- Applicants must have primary/rigorous wildland firefighting experience, acquired through hands-on fire line work in containment, control, suppression, or management of wildland fire.
- Completion of the Primary NWCG Core Requirements of Taskforce Leader (TFLD) and Incident Commander Type 3 (ICT3) or Prescribed Burn Boss (RXB2) is required.
- Alternatively, completion of Helibase Manager (HEBM) and Incident Commander Type 3 (ICT3) is acceptable.
Additional Experience for GS-11 Level:
- One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service, including reviewing fire management plans for ecological soundness and conducting field inspections.
- Experience in analyzing fire management strategies, fuel loadings, and land use planning is essential.
Education cannot substitute for experience at the specified grade levels.
