Role Overview

The Commercial Rating and Underwriting (CRU) team operates within the Credit and Fraud Risk division at American Express. This team is essential in evaluating and managing the risk associated with institutional exposures across various business sectors globally. The CRU team is responsible for determining internal credit ratings that influence the probability of default for each exposure, as well as calculating potential losses in the event of default.

Key Responsibilities

As an intern in the CRU team, you will engage in:

  • Evaluating and underwriting credit exposures in designated regions and industries.
  • Conducting comprehensive analyses that include business, financial, industry, and country risk assessments.
  • Collaborating with internal and external rating models to support your evaluations.
  • Understanding the necessity for credit extensions and the profitability of relationships.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Enrollment in a full-time undergraduate degree program.
  • Preference for candidates graduating in the near future.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of fundamental financial analysis and corporate financial documentation.
  • Familiarity with accounting standards and corporate valuation techniques.
  • Understanding of macroeconomic trends and their impact on credit risk.
  • Experience in preparing credit memorandums.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Relevant coursework in finance, accounting, economics, or statistics is advantageous.
