Position Summary

The Mountain Resorts Legal team is in search of a Lead Counsel to join our skilled group. This vibrant and adaptable team offers legal guidance to our premier resorts within the Mountain Division, as well as a wide array of corporate functions.

In this pivotal and visible role, the Lead Counsel will report directly to the VP & Associate General Counsel, regularly advising executive leadership, including the General Counsel and Regional COOs of the Mountain Division, on diverse matters such as real estate, regulatory challenges, and other issues affecting our year-round operations.

A successful candidate will demonstrate a well-rounded legal background, possessing substantial expertise in one or more transactional, commercial, or regulatory law areas, along with a proven ability to swiftly adapt to new legal and business domains. They will effectively identify significant risks, efficiently allocate resources, and clearly communicate and implement necessary mitigation strategies. The most effective attorneys at Vail Resorts are collaborative, driven, and insightful.

Key Responsibilities

  • Offer legal counsel and support to the Mountain Division and corporate functions regarding year-round operations across various legal matters;
  • Proactively recognize trends in legal issues to strategically reduce risks associated with mountain operations;
  • Remain informed on state and federal regulations affecting resort operations, and collaborate with the Company's compliance team on related programs and policies;
  • Work cross-functionally with other departments to assist in the development and advisement of company policies, procedures, and best practices;
  • Design and deliver legal training sessions for various stakeholders;
  • Contribute to the leadership of the legal department, with potential management of direct reports;
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) and a Bachelor’s degree are required.
  • An active state bar license is mandatory. If holding a non-Colorado bar license, the candidate must qualify for a Colorado single-client or full bar license.
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience as a practicing attorney in a law firm, government, or in-house setting.
  • A flexible thinker with a demonstrated ability to learn new legal areas and business operations.
  • A strong commitment to providing outstanding service to business clients, characterized by resourcefulness and responsiveness.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with all organizational levels.
  • Proactive, team-oriented, and capable of managing various legal matters effectively.
  • Sound judgment with the ability to analyze issues, propose solutions, and offer creative, practical, and legally sound advice aligned with business objectives.
  • Strong organizational and time management capabilities.
  • Ability to manage urgent situations with composure and diplomacy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience leading complex cross-functional initiatives across an organization.
  • Familiarity with issues affecting public lands, including the US Forest Service or state-leased lands.
  • Experience in water law, environmental compliance, or tramway boards.

Compensation and Benefits

The anticipated total compensation for this role ranges from $165,000 to $185,000, plus an annual bonus and equity. Individual compensation decisions are influenced by various factors.

Vail Resorts offers a 'Hybrid' work environment for roles based in Broomfield, where employees are required to reside within 50 miles of the Broomfield office and work on-site three days a week, with flexibility to work remotely on the remaining days.
