Psychiatric Social Health Specialist

Job Summary:The Psychiatric Social Health Tech will work under the supervision of a registered professional nurse and collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to provide therapeutic and related mental health services. The successful candidate will maintain direct contact with patients who have emotional problems and handicaps, interact with patients in the psychiatric/substance abuse areas, and ensure a properly maintained physical, social, and clinical environment.
Key Responsibilities:- Apply knowledge of therapeutic communication techniques to interact with patients and families.
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of psychiatric and chemical dependency disease processes, including the impact of anxiety on behavior.
- Identify the chain of command in the problem-solving process and use it in a timely fashion.
- State the hospital mission to patients and families and describe its impact on patient care.
- Provide a safe environment during the admission process, patient search, property check, and visitor check.
- Escort patients to court, outside agencies, clinics, activities within the hospital, and on the units.
- Assist professional staff in implementing the treatment plan, including vital signs, lab work, EKGs, specimens, group activities, and activities of daily living.
- Perform tasks to ensure patient safety and security, including the use of restraint, C.O., Q30 check, seclusion, and check sheets.
- Report changes in patients' behavior or physical status to charge personnel in a timely fashion.
- Examine personal difficulties in working with acutely ill psychiatric patients and seek assistance from other team members.
- Assess difficulties in promoting certain policies and procedures and report them in staff meetings before major problems develop.
- Comply with all policies concerning confidentiality, especially where patients are known in the community.
- Work effectively as a member of the multidisciplinary team in planning and implementing behavioral treatment plans.
- Understand the impact of staff behavior on patients and resolve interpersonal staff issues in private areas.
- Interact courteously with patients and families in explaining and enforcing unit rules and regulations.
- Assist professional staff in educating patients and families about mental illness and substance abuse symptoms, compliance with aftercare, and individual and group education.
- Six months of satisfactory experience assisting patients with daily living and therapeutic activities and performing other related functions in a hospital or healthcare setting.
- Holds or obtains a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA) within sixty calendar days of appointment to the title.
