General Overview of Responsibilities

This role is part of the Henrico County Encore Program, specifically designed for retired employees of Henrico County. The Encore initiative aims to provide a unique opportunity for former dedicated staff to return and address critical operational needs within the Sheriff's Office. Successful candidates will receive compensation at the hourly rate corresponding to their retirement pay. Key Responsibilities

The Encore Law Enforcement Officer will be tasked with various duties across multiple sections of the Sheriff's Office, adapting to the department's immediate needs, which may include areas such as Jail East, Jail West, and Civil Process.

  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of the principles, practices, and techniques involved in the care and custody of inmates, along with a solid grasp of mandated regulations and standards from relevant authorities.
  • Familiarity with the operational procedures of the Sheriff's Office and its facilities.
  • Awareness of occupational hazards, safety protocols, and regulations pertinent to facility and inmate management, in alignment with County safety policies.
  • Knowledge of courtroom procedures and judicial processes.
  • Understanding of institutional best practices for inmate care and custody, as well as the geographic and jurisdictional boundaries of the County and neighboring localities.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong communication skills, capable of articulating ideas and recommendations clearly to diverse audiences, both verbally and in writing.
  • Capacity to interact firmly yet courteously with the public and inmates.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative relationships with other public safety agencies and County personnel.
  • Competence in interpreting and applying regulations to inmate interactions as necessary.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to achieve departmental and County objectives, demonstrating political acumen.
  • Proven ability to multitask and manage competing priorities effectively.
  • Critical thinking skills for problem-solving and making sound decisions, especially in high-pressure situations.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate records and preparing reports, along with familiarity with personal computers and automated systems for data management.
  • Excellent customer service skills, demonstrating tact and courtesy.

This position requires flexibility in scheduling, which may include shift work, overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have successfully completed the Henrico County Sheriff's Office basic training academy and all necessary training for correctional officers, as mandated by the Criminal Justice Officers Training and Standards Commission. Candidates must hold a valid driver's license from the State of Virginia and be U.S. citizens. A pre-employment physical examination and medical tests will be conducted, tailored to the specific demands of the position. This role is essential personnel, meaning the officer may be required to work during County closures. Uniform adherence and compliance with the Sheriff's Office Personal Grooming Policy are mandatory.

Additional Information

A criminal history record check and fingerprinting will be conducted for all candidates conditionally offered employment. Eligible applicants must have been retired from Henrico County for a minimum of six months prior to applying. Job assignments will vary based on departmental needs, and successful candidates will be classified as hourly/temporary employees, limited to a maximum of 29 hours per week or 1,500 hours within a twelve-month period to maintain retirement benefits.
