Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Wildlife Furbearer Program Assistant. In this role, you will assist in the management and coordination of furbearer wildlife programs, including data entry, phone calls, and fieldwork.

Responsibilities
  • Enter and organize data into computer files, including furbearer sighting reports, necropsy data, furbearer capture and handling data, and furbearer harvest reports;
  • Answer phone calls and emails from the public, providing technical assistance and advice on resolving human-bear conflicts;
  • Record sightings and provide technical assistance, particularly advice on resolving human-bear conflicts;
  • Conduct radio-telemetry on collared animals;
  • Orient to, and examine, specified field locations to identify sites of predation, denning, and or study-animal mortality;
  • Transport and set bear traps at sites of human-bear conflicts;
  • Assist with chemically immobilizing, tagging, and the aversive conditioning of black bears;
  • Assist in organizing field equipment;
  • Perform related duties as required.
Requirements
  • Ability to follow instructions;
  • Experience with radio-telemetry, identifying tracks & sign, maintaining camera grids, moving/hauling trailers, chemical immobilization, operating handheld GPS units, and assisting with permitting and addressing human-wildlife conflicts;
  • Ability to maintain a positive work ethic in a professional environment;
  • Incumbents in this class who are assigned as supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate;
  • Incumbents in this class may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following: Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license. Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides. College training in a specific field. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities.
Working Conditions
  • Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class;
  • Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
