Job Overview

Position Summary:

The Diesel Mechanic will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of machinery, vehicles, and equipment utilized in the upkeep of the university's grounds.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform maintenance and repairs on various groundskeeping equipment and machinery, including tractors, construction vehicles, utility trucks, mowers, pressure washers, chainsaws, and other outdoor power tools.
  • Service and repair light and medium-duty trucks.
  • Conduct diagnostics and repairs on diesel, gasoline, and 2-cycle engines.
  • Diagnose and repair hydraulic systems.
  • Work on low-voltage, direct-current electrical systems.
  • Engage in welding and light metal fabrication tasks.
  • Prepare parts lists for repair estimates and orders.
  • Document repairs, parts utilized, and labor hours for maintenance records.
  • Ensure a clean and safe working environment.
  • Operate equipment and vehicles on campus as required.
  • Communicate effectively and courteously with staff, students, and the public, fostering a spirit of teamwork and customer service.
  • Serve as a Christian role model to students through actions and interactions.
  • Demonstrate respect and appreciation for diverse backgrounds and work well with a variety of individuals.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

A Typical Day:

The Diesel Mechanic will engage in regular maintenance and repair of the university's fleet of groundskeeping and construction equipment. Daily tasks will vary, including the upkeep of utility vehicles, compact tractors, and construction machinery. Responsibilities may also involve welding, metal fabrication, and operating equipment as necessary. The primary work location will be the Plant Services shop, with occasional tasks performed across the campus.


Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in servicing and repairing agricultural, construction, or groundskeeping equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operation and repair of:
    • Diesel and gasoline engines.
    • Powertrain components.
    • Hydraulic systems.
    • Low-voltage electrical systems.
    • Welding and metal fabrication.
    • Safe operation of vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to work safely and effectively in a university environment.
  • Strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to present information clearly to management.
  • Maintain a positive representation of the university in all communications.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record and ability to pass university driver certification.
  • Possess personal hand tools.
  • A commitment to Christian values and lifestyle in alignment with the university's mission.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completion of diesel or vocational training programs.
  • Certifications in diesel mechanics, welding, or related trades.
  • Experience operating farm or construction equipment.

Job Information:

  • Hours: 40 hours per week (1.0 FTE)
  • Location: Newberg Campus
  • Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift and/or move up to 70 pounds occasionally, with specific vision abilities including close vision and depth perception.
  • Supervisor: Fleet Manager
