Position Overview

As a vital member of the Student Life and Engagement (SLE) team, the Unit Human Resources Administrator I serves as a key resource for SLE administrators while acting as a liaison to central Michigan State University Human Resources. This role is responsible for managing and coordinating various human resources activities, as well as interpreting and implementing HR policies, procedures, and collective bargaining agreements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee and administer HR functions related to time and attendance, disciplinary actions, leaves of absence, and accommodation requests for a large and complex administrative unit.
  • Act as the designated representative for conducting and maintaining criminal background checks for employees involved in youth summer camp events, as well as managing the background check process for event workers and volunteers at athletic events.
  • Assist in labor relations activities, including conducting investigations, managing disciplinary actions, and addressing grievances.
  • Provide guidance to staff and resolve complex issues in the administration of HR programs and functions.
  • Advise unit administrators on HR policies, procedures, and collective bargaining agreement language.
  • Coordinate and analyze SLE HR labor relations data, preparing reports as necessary.
  • Collaborate with MSU HR and other departments, such as MSU Police, to oversee the criminal background check process for youth summer camp and athletic events.
  • Manage operational activities and perform related administrative tasks as assigned.
  • Work closely with the MSU HR Accommodation Specialist and SLE supervisors to handle accommodation requests.
Communication and Interpersonal Relationships

Interacts with:
  • Administrators/Supervisors to provide updates, discuss HR management activities, and receive assignments.
  • Unit Faculty, Academic Staff, Support Staff, Managers, and Supervisors to provide information and advice on HR matters.
  • MSU Human Resources Staff and Union Representatives to discuss disciplinary actions and grievances.
  • Volunteer Groups to facilitate the completion of criminal background checks.
Work Environment

This position is based in a standard office environment. While it is remote-friendly, attendance at sporting and special events during evenings and weekends is required.

All positions within SLE are designated as critical status. In the event of a university closure or emergency, individuals in this role are expected to make reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled. If a remote work agreement is in place, employees may be called upon to work on-site to support the MSU community.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge equivalent to that typically acquired through the completion of a four-year degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field; three to five years of progressively responsible experience in managing human resource functions and labor relations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Prior experience with ICHAT is preferred.
