Role Summary

As a key member of the Celestica Global Automation team, you will be an experienced Engineer who identifies opportunities for assembly optimization and envisions the transformation of manual processes into efficient automated solutions. Your hands-on experience in machinery design, robotics, PLC programming, and adherence to safety and global standards will be essential. You will thrive in a collaborative environment, working alongside a team to establish the requirements and specifications necessary for creating top-tier equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design automation solutions that align with both universal and site-specific automation objectives.
  • Offer technical expertise in defining adaptable and scalable automation systems.
  • Develop tools and methodologies to support automation initiatives.
  • Engage with clients and internal/external design teams to address site-specific automation requirements.

Primary Duties:

  • Evaluate all facets of the manufacturing process to identify automation needs.
  • Prepare Requests for Proposals/Quotes for automation projects and assist throughout the Project Life Cycle.
  • Facilitate training for regional and site engineering teams in automation practices.
  • Enhance existing automation systems through continuous improvement efforts.
  • Address customer automation requirements during New Product Introduction and product transitions.
  • Coordinate subsystem designs and integrate comprehensive automation systems for specific processes.
  • Act as an automation consultant for regional engineering teams and clients.
  • Collaborate with various automation specialists to deliver cutting-edge automation solutions.
  • Oversee project management, ensuring timely and budget-compliant project execution, including:
    • Maintaining communication with all project stakeholders from conception through to production.
    • Documenting project phases: Charter, Statement of Work, testing plans, acceptance criteria, and project closure.
    • Tracking and reporting project timelines and financials.
    • Managing changes, risks, and communications effectively.
    • Driving decision-making and problem-solving processes.

Travel Requirements:

  • Anticipate travel to vendor and site locations, approximately 25-30%, with potential increases during critical project phases.

Essential Skills and Competencies:

Required:

  • Ability to analyze and define automation requirements while driving deliverables through a global network of vendors and internal resources.
  • Strong professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to adhering to all health and safety regulations.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team setting and actively engage in group discussions.
  • Experience with the integration of third-party automation solutions.
  • Adaptability to dynamic and fast-paced environments.
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing principles.
  • Project management experience with a basic understanding of PMBOK methodologies.
  • Understanding of financial metrics and calculations (ROI, Payback, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of various automation systems and tools, including robotics, vision inspection, material handling, and PLCs.
  • Experience with Automated Turnkey Solutions, including design, manufacturing, installation, start-up, and commissioning.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting PLCs, robots, and HMIs.
  • Familiarity with drafting principles using AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks.
  • Experience with analytical software such as Minitab.
  • Understanding of layout, tooling/fixturing, demand flow, cell concepts, and simulation tools.

Experience Requirements:

  • A minimum of 5 years of automation experience in the manufacturing sector, ideally within assembly processes.
  • A minimum of 5 years of project management experience in manufacturing, utilizing tools such as MS Project or Smartsheet.

Educational Background:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • PMP project management certification is preferred.
