Automotive Paint and Body Technician

Job Summary:
The role involves executing all paint preparation and bodywork tasks necessary to ready vehicles for the final painting process. This includes preparing surfaces through sanding, minor body repairs, taping, and chemical washing to ensure a high-quality painting surface. Occasionally, heavier bodywork may be required based on production needs. The technician will be responsible for completing all aspects of repairing holes, significant dents, and other general bodywork tasks, including buffing and polishing to achieve an acceptable quality finish.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure all seams are sealed and products are prepared appropriately.
- Clean all areas designated for painting using a degreaser solvent.
- Sand and scuff surfaces on vehicles that exhibit previous paint imperfections.
- Grind welds and apply body filler as necessary.
- Mask off edges and areas where paint application is not required.
- Remove tape and paper from the vehicle post-painting once dried.
- Repair any dents and gouges in metal surfaces.
- Utilize air files, mix sand, and apply body filler to achieve a finished surface.
- Maintain and clean equipment and paint guns as needed.
- Handle chemicals safely according to established guidelines.
- Perform fiberglass laminations for repairs or production as required.
- Adhere to all QA and QC standards for each task.
- Work with minimal supervision while demonstrating attention to detail.
- Encourage the application of Lean Manufacturing continuous improvement tools as part of the workplace culture.
- Comply with company policies regarding conduct and attendance.
- Be prepared to undertake additional duties as assigned.
- Ability to read, write, comprehend, and communicate simple instructions and correspondence in English.
- Capability to perform all operations within acceptable quality and time standards.
- Ability to recognize and reproduce expected quality standards.
- Proficiency in operating dual-action sanders, grinders, and various hand tools.
- Experience in spraying primers using an air paint system.
- Retention of information regarding chemicals and their proper usage.
- Willingness to learn how to mix primers and other paint products.
- General knowledge of OSHA and EPA standards is essential.
Bodyworker III:
- Three (3+) years of experience in paint preparation.
- Two (1-3) years of experience in paint preparation.
- One (1) year of experience in paint preparation.
- Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds without assistance.
- Capability to work from various positions including squatting, kneeling, or bending.
- Ability to work with arms elevated.
- Comfortable working from ladders or scaffolding.
- Ability to stand at a workstation for extended periods.
- Proficient in safely using specified hand, air, and power tools.
- Understanding of protective safety equipment operation.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
- Ability to endure repetitive motions.
- Comfortable working in noisy and dusty environments.
