- Plans, organizes, and delegates daily tasks for the crew after interpreting directives from a General Foreperson/Line Clearance Supervisor.
- Conducts field training and retraining, instructing the crew on new or updated job units.
- Enforces safe work practices as dictated by experience, judgment, company policy, and OSHA regulations, and provides safety training in accordance with company standards.
- Engages with property owners/customers regarding issues such as access, power interruptions, work to be performed, and liability for any apparent property damage; escalates contentious cases to the General Foreperson.
- Secures oral or written consent from property owners to carry out necessary work.
- Fosters and maintains positive customer and public relations through effective completion of assigned tasks and the appropriate conduct of crew members.
- May be authorized to investigate incident reports, damage claims, and to resolve minor damage claims.
- Maintains accurate records, timesheets, and reports related to crew performance.
- Manages crew expenses, ensuring effective utilization of personnel, work methods, and equipment operation.
- Provides the General Foreperson and utility representatives with reports on completed orders, units of work, crew time, minor damage repairs, and distribution.
- Regularly submits reports on incidents, vehicle breakdowns, property damage, and new employee follow-ups.
- Collaborates with customers, police, and fire departments when obstructing streets or driveways.
- Establishes barriers, warning signs, flags, and markers to protect employees and safeguard the public from hazards. In emergencies, determines actions to mitigate risks to life and property.
- Inspects and arranges for necessary repairs to tools, trucks, and other equipment.
- Ensures cleanliness on the truck and at the work site.
- Responsible for DOT maintenance and inspection requirements for all necessary vehicles.
- Stays informed about new equipment, specifications, standard practices, operating procedures, and customer and employee relations policies, including EEO and AA policies. Requests repairs or replacements as needed.
- Must comprehend drawings and symbols representing lines, voltages, and line equipment.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills are essential.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask are required.
- Must be capable of adapting to field requirements and taking independent action without close supervision.
- Must be able to safely operate a company vehicle.
- Ability to work with hands raised for extended periods is necessary.
- Due to equipment capacity, weight should not exceed approximately 300 pounds.
- Must have no fear of heights.
- Willingness to pay union dues is required.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent is preferred.
- A minimum of 1 year of relevant industry experience is required.
- Candidates may be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen, background check, and/or MVR check upon offer.
- A valid Driver's License is preferred.
- RARE (less than 10%): crawling, climbing, gripping, lifting up to 50 lbs.
- OCCASIONAL (up to 33%): standing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, body-twisting, sense of touch, manual dexterity, lifting over 10 lbs. to 50 lbs., reaching, range-of-motion, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing ladders, climbing stairs, balancing.
- FREQUENT (up to 66%): walking, sitting, climbing on/off truck, reading, lifting up to 10 lbs.
- CONTINUOUS (up to 100%): speaking clearly, seeing distant, seeing, hearing-speech-range, depth-perception, color vision.
Given the inherently hazardous nature of the industry and the necessity to work with or around dangerous equipment, employees must possess adequate eyesight to judge distances and coordinate equipment and tools. They must maintain focus and concentration for extended periods, endure exposure to various weather conditions while completing tasks, wear personal protective equipment as required, and have the stamina to navigate diverse terrains. Employees should be capable of performing job duties throughout a standard 8- or 10-hour shift, communicate effectively, and comprehend written and verbal instructions.
- Works in proximity to energized power lines.
- Exposed to high noise levels from machinery, chainsaws, wood chippers, and other equipment while using hearing protection.
- Works in all weather conditions and may encounter nature-related irritants, such as plants and insects.
- Operates at varying heights and on uneven surfaces.
- Must be able to walk, climb, and work from ladders or at various heights, performing physically and mentally demanding tasks under challenging weather conditions while handling equipment or materials.
As a comprehensive utility contractor, Asplundh provides tree pruning and removal, right-of-way clearing and maintenance, vegetation management with herbicides, emergency storm response, and logistical support. Asplundh is the parent company of Asplundh Infrastructure Group, whose subsidiaries offer overhead and underground line construction, planning and design, meter reading, AMR/AMI installation, electrical testing, and street lighting/traffic signal services. Asplundh also operates Rotor Blade Airborne Utilities Management, managing overhead electric distribution and transmission lines using helicopters.
