Position Summary
The Campus Safety Officer role is part of the Patrol Operations team within Campus Safety. Officers serve as the primary safety and security personnel for the University, tasked with patrolling the campus and its facilities while assisting the campus community with various issues and concerns. Multiple positions are available through this recruitment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular patrols of designated areas, inspecting buildings and ensuring safety of doors, windows, entries, and exits.
  • Respond promptly to fire alarms and emergencies.
  • Collaborate with fire and police departments, as well as other public safety organizations.
  • Provide initial responses to emergencies and criminal incidents on University grounds, conducting preliminary investigations.
  • Offer general assistance to the campus community and visitors.
  • Apprehend individuals violating city, state, or federal laws on University property.
  • Operate University patrol vehicles and communication equipment as assigned.
  • Prepare written reports and maintain logs of campus activities.
  • Serve as Division dispatcher, managing incoming service calls, monitoring alarms, dispatching officers, and overseeing CCTV systems.
  • Comply with all Division and University policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Participate in the interview process for new hires when requested by management.
  • Engage in recruitment and accreditation efforts for the Division.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum age of 21 at the time of hiring.
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Colorado driver's license and insurability under University guidelines; or obtain a valid license within the required timeframe.
  • Successful completion of a written job-related skills examination.
  • Pass a comprehensive background check, including criminal history and verification of employment and education.
  • Complete a pre-employment physical, drug screening, and human performance evaluation by an approved physician.

Post-Hire Employment Requirements

  • Ability to obtain a City and County of Denver Security Guard License within three weeks of hire.
  • Complete initial certification in Basic First Aid/CPR/AED, Defensive Driving, and TPR (Threat Pattern Recognition) Use of Force Basic within three weeks of hire.
  • Maintain re-certifications in Basic First Aid/CPR/AED and TPR to uphold job-related skills.
  • Complete an annual physical assessment test as part of TPR re-certification to maintain physical fitness standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or equivalent coursework in Criminal Justice, Police Science, or Security Management; or 6+ months of related law enforcement or Campus Safety experience; or a combination of education and experience.

Working Environment
As field-based personnel, Campus Safety Officers work outdoors in various weather conditions. This position may require working any shift or combination of shifts as determined by management. Officers are considered essential personnel and may be called to work additional hours for shift coverage or special events.

Physical Requirements
All personnel required to have a City and County of Denver issued Security Guard License must pass a job-related human performance evaluation as part of the employment offer. This evaluation includes:

- Lifting and carrying traffic cones (10 lbs) and fire extinguishers (15 lbs)
- Climbing stairs and accessing rooftops
- Responding to medical emergencies and performing CPR

Specific vision abilities required include correction to 20/30 vision, night vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Must also possess hearing abilities for safety-related tasks. Maintaining fitness standards is essential for physically apprehending suspects and providing emergency services.

Work Schedule
This is a non-exempt position with a 40-hour work week. Officers may work varied hours during a 24/7 schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
