A Sleep Study Specialist operates under the overall guidance of the medical director or their delegate to deliver thorough assessment and management of sleep-related disorders. This includes both in-facility and at-home sleep evaluations, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, comprehensive patient care, and direct education for patients. The specialist is certified in sleep technology and is qualified to perform the responsibilities designated for a sleep technician while also supervising other personnel within the sleep center.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Gather, assess, and synthesize patient data to identify and address individual patient needs, considering physical and mental limitations, emotional and physiological status related to testing, and relevant medical and social history.
  • Examine the patient's medical history and confirm the medical directive.
  • Adhere to established protocols for the sleep center during the study. Conduct operational checks prior to starting the study and ensure the precision and safety of the equipment utilized during patient monitoring.
  • Upon patient arrival, confirm identity, collect necessary documentation, and secure consent for the procedure. Clearly explain the process and orient the patient for either in-facility or at-home sleep assessments.
  • Carry out routine fittings and desensitization for positive airway pressure (PAP) interfaces.
  • Implement procedural protocols such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia evaluations, PAP, and oxygen titration to guarantee the collection of valid data.
  • Perform essential physiological calibrations to ensure accurate signal acquisition and make necessary adjustments.
  • Follow 'lights out' protocols to establish and document baseline metrics including body position, oxygen saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc.
  • Conduct data acquisition while monitoring the quality of study tracings to ensure signals are free from artifacts. Identify, rectify, and document any artifacts encountered.
  • Record routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical occurrences, procedural changes, and other significant events to aid in the scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic findings.
  • Implement suitable interventions for patient safety and therapeutic measures, such as positive airway pressure and oxygen administration.
  • Follow 'lights on' procedures to verify the integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process, including repeating physiological and instrument calibrations and guiding the patient in completing questionnaires.
  • Score sleep/wake stages according to established professional guidelines and clinical events using AASM standards.
  • Generate precise reports by compiling sleep/wake and clinical event data.
  • Exhibit the knowledge and skills necessary for preparing portable monitoring equipment and downloading data.
  • Adhere to cleaning and disinfection protocols for portable monitoring devices.
  • Comply with AASM scoring criteria for home sleep apnea testing; identify artifacts, inadequate signals, and study failures, and produce an accurate report.
Qualifications

Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of an accredited educational program leading to a certificate or associate degree with a focus on sleep technology.
OR
  • Completion of a sleep technology program from a state-licensed and/or nationally accredited educational institution or equivalent experience with documented proficiency in all competencies required of a sleep technician.
Certification:
  • Certification from a nationally recognized certification board, holding either the Registered Sleep Technologist (RST), Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT), or Sleep Disorders Specialist (SDS) credential.
  • Current CPR certification is mandatory.
Experience:
  • At least 1 year of relevant work experience.
Knowledge:
  • Understanding of testing procedures, protocols, and patient care for sleep/wake disorders.
  • Familiarity with the equipment utilized in testing patients with sleep and wake disorders.
  • Compliance with applicable laws, guidelines, and standards concerning safety and infection control.
  • Adherence to HIPAA regulations to maintain the confidentiality and security of patient information.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Exceptional customer service skills.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Ability to follow written instructions and standardized procedures.
Work Environment:
  • Position located in a well-lit office setting with frequent interaction with a diverse patient population.
  • Potential exposure to chemical vapors from cleaning and disinfecting agents, as well as skin contact with these substances.
  • Possible exposure to infectious agents, including bloodborne pathogens.
Physical Requirements:
  • Requires manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for operating sleep study equipment; training on equipment will be provided. Frequent lifting and assistance with patients weighing up to 300 lbs.
  • Involves sitting approximately 80% of the time, with walking or standing for the remainder.
  • Regularly requires standing, using hands for manipulation, reaching, climbing, and communicating.
  • Occasionally requires walking, sitting, and stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision capabilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
