Position Overview:
The Sleep Study Specialist operates under the general oversight of the medical director or their designated representative to deliver thorough assessment and management of sleep-related disorders. This includes both in-center and out-of-center sleep evaluations, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, comprehensive patient care, and direct education for patients.

Key Responsibilities:
As a credentialed professional in sleep technology, the Sleep Study Specialist is responsible for performing the tasks designated for a sleep technician while also supervising other staff members within the sleep center.

  • Gather, assess, and integrate patient data to address individual needs, including physical and mental limitations, emotional and physiological status, and relevant medical and social history.
  • Review patient history and confirm medical orders.
  • Adhere to sleep center protocols throughout the sleep study process.
  • Conduct operational checks prior to initiating studies and ensure the precision and safety of the instruments utilized during patient recordings.
  • Upon patient arrival, verify identity, collect necessary documents, and obtain consent for the study.
  • Explain the procedure to the patient and provide orientation for both in-center and out-of-center sleep evaluations.
  • Perform routine fittings and desensitization for positive airway pressure (PAP) interfaces.
  • Follow established protocols for various tests, such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) and Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), to ensure the collection of relevant data.
  • Carry out physiological calibrations to guarantee accurate signals and make necessary adjustments.
  • Document observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, to assist in scoring and interpreting polysomnographic results.
  • Implement appropriate interventions to ensure patient safety and therapeutic effectiveness.
  • Score sleep/wake stages and clinical events according to accepted professional guidelines.
  • Generate precise reports by compiling sleep/wake and clinical event data.

Qualifications:
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of an accredited educational program in sleep technology or equivalent experience is required.

Certification:
Certification from a recognized board, holding credentials such as Registered Sleep Technologist (RST) or Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) is mandatory.

Experience:
A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is necessary.

Knowledge and Skills:
Understanding of testing procedures and protocols for patients with sleep/wake disorders, along with knowledge of the equipment used in these evaluations. Compliance with safety and infection control regulations is essential.

Work Environment:
This position is based in a well-lit office environment with frequent interaction with a diverse patient population. Employees may encounter chemical vapors and infectious agents.

Physical Requirements:
Manual dexterity and coordination are necessary for operating sleep study equipment. The role involves significant lifting and assisting patients, requiring physical stamina.
