Summary
Rail Vehicle Repair Technicians are responsible for conducting both preventive and corrective maintenance on Siemens Light Rail Vehicles. Maintenance operations are carried out seven days a week, encompassing daytime, evening, and night shifts. The Rail Car Maintenance division operates two facilities, and successful completion of the RCM Technician training is essential. Following training, personnel will execute recommended preventative and corrective maintenance on rail transit vehicles. In addition to supporting light rail operations, streetcar operations, wayside operations, and public safety, the incumbent may also provide assistance to other departments as needed.
Availability for various shifts, including holidays, nights, and weekends, is required.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Execute maintenance tasks as specified by the Rail Operations Maintenance guidelines.
- Maintain standard tools of the trade; specialty tools will be provided by the department.
- Adhere to all Rail Car Maintenance standards, policies, and procedures relevant to daily operations of rail vehicles and revenue service.
- Collaborate with all Rail Car Maintenance personnel and related departments to ensure safe, reliable, and clean rail vehicles are prepared for daily revenue service.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair all systems associated with rail vehicle operations, including propulsion, braking, HVAC, automatic train protection, doors, auxiliary power, power collection, pneumatics, hydraulics, trucks, car body, and all maintenance and emergency support equipment using necessary tools and equipment.
- Respond to rail system emergencies that may cause significant service interruptions and serious vehicle incidents, providing necessary remedial actions to restore service.
- Conduct acceptance testing and pre-service evaluations of newly acquired rail vehicles, as well as required multi-system tests.
- Comply with all safety regulations established by CATS, OSHA, FTA, FRA, and NCDOT.
- Perform any other job-related duties as assigned.
- Support the CATS Safety Culture by reporting safety concerns through established methods as outlined in the ASP.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Capability to lift and carry a minimum of 60 lbs.
- Ability to manipulate weights up to 100 lbs.
- Proficiency in standing and walking on uneven surfaces during work.
- Capacity to work in various positions or conditions: sitting, bending, twisting, kneeling, reaching, crouching, lying prone or supine, at shoulder level or above, or any combination thereof.
- Competence in working at heights on platforms and man lifts.
- Ability to work in pits and beneath lifted heavy equipment.
- Must wear all required Personal Protective Equipment and Safety gear.
- Compliance with the assigned uniform approved by CATS is mandatory.
- Flexibility to work various shifts, including holidays, nights, and weekends.

Special Provisions:
- This position is classified as "Safety Sensitive" under FTA guidelines. Candidates/Employees must pass a pre-employment drug test and will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
- Candidates must complete a 9-month probationary period.
- Depending on the needs of CATS, candidates may be required to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License.

Preferred Qualification
- A high school diploma or GED, supplemented by a degree or certificate in relevant fields such as:
- Mechanical engineering
- Electrical engineering
- Electrical technology
- Industrial technology
- Machinist certificate
- Military Training (mechanical or electrical)
- Proof of completion of electrical or electronics training from the Armed Forces
- A minimum of two years of experience in repairing systems including electrical, electronic, and electro-mechanical systems.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation or equivalent with three years of relevant work experience
OR
An Associate's Degree with one year of relevant work experience

Conditions of Employment
The City's Background Check Policy mandates background checks for final internal or external candidates applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
