Position Overview:

General Dynamics is seeking a Scientific Technology Engineer to enhance the scientific capabilities for our client at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Our Cyber Infrastructure Support Services (CISS) Team delivers extensive infrastructure, application, cybersecurity, and user support for both enterprise and scientific community clients at NIAID. The Scientific IT team is dedicated to facilitating High Performance Computing along with its related infrastructure, scientific applications, and user support for NIAID's intramural research community. This team acts as a primary support contact for the NIAID research community, addressing new initiatives, ongoing projects, and scientific IT support requirements.

As a Scientific Technology Engineer supporting NIAID, you will leverage your systems engineering expertise to advance scientific IT support and services. You will collaborate with a diverse group of engineers in the Operations and Engineering Branch (OEB) to support NIAID's mission of understanding, treating, and preventing infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases.

Impact of the Role:
  • Collaborate with NIAID engineers and scientists to assess and support project-based initiatives.
  • Address local scientific support challenges in partnership with the scientific support team.
  • Provide assistance for high-performance computing applications on HPC clusters.
  • Evaluate scientific projects and offer recommendations, planning, and design for new hardware, software, and workflows to meet specific needs.
  • Work alongside engineering and support teams to enhance and optimize scientific support capabilities.
  • Analyze system components and suggest improvements to enhance system availability and performance.
  • Maintain clear communication regarding project timelines, resource needs, risk management, and status updates.
Qualifications for Success:

Education: BA/BS (or equivalent)

Experience: Minimum of two years in a relevant field

Technical Skills Required:
  • Experience in supporting scientific applications and clientele.
  • Familiarity with scientific instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of local area networking, including cables, switches, and IP addressing.
Security Clearance: Must be eligible for NIH Public Trust

Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Effective communication abilities.
Preferred Skills:
  • Linux administration and scientific background, including Bash or Python scripting.
  • Ability to create comprehensive documentation for technology solutions.
  • Hands-on experience with High Performance Computing or Computational Science Infrastructure.
  • Formal education in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in analyzing solution components, understanding systems integration challenges, and identifying technology gaps in current systems.
  • Work arrangement: hybrid - two days onsite and three days remote.
