SUMMARY

MISBO is a transformative summer enrichment initiative designed for students in grades 6-9 who face systemic challenges. This program is offered at no cost, aiming to foster academic confidence, instill a passion for learning, and equip students with essential life skills. Established in 1986, MISBO has grown from a single site in San Francisco to a network serving thousands of students across the Bay Area.

Headquartered in San Francisco, MISBO's management team collaborates year-round with a dedicated staff of approximately 20-25 full-time professionals, alongside numerous seasonal employees. The organization operates with an annual budget of around $7 million, primarily funded through donations, grants, and strategic partnerships. With $20 million in net assets and no debt, MISBO is well-positioned for future growth.

MISBO is currently seeking a relational and community-focused Vice President of Development. This role is crucial in overseeing all philanthropic activities, which are vital for the organization's revenue. Reporting directly to the CEO, the VP will lead a small team of development professionals. Initial responsibilities will include building relationships with staff and both current and prospective donors, as well as collaborating closely with the CEO to communicate MISBO's mission and impact effectively.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Philanthropic Strategy

  1. Lead the development of a comprehensive philanthropic strategy to enhance MISBO's impact through a community-centered approach.
  2. Advise the CEO on both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives.
  3. Collaborate with the CEO, Board, and leadership team to establish a long-term sustainability framework for the organization.
  4. Support the strategic plan and explore innovative ways to expand MISBO's impact and funding sources.
  5. Utilize current and emerging technologies to enhance donor engagement and outreach efforts.

Donor Relations

  1. Enhance MISBO's visibility by expanding the major gifts donor base while nurturing existing relationships.
  2. Work with development and program teams to organize and execute fundraising events, including donor receptions and special gatherings.
  3. Generate timely and accurate financial and donor reports for individual and institutional contributors.
  4. Build meaningful connections with donors, alumni, students, and other stakeholders to authentically convey MISBO's impact.

Organizational Leadership

  1. Act as a senior leader within the organization, actively participating in the leadership team.
  2. Oversee, mentor, and manage the development team, with potential for future hires.
  3. Ensure the development team is adequately resourced and equipped with the necessary tools and processes to meet goals.
  4. Assess and analyze team performance through a thoughtful collection of metrics that serve as coaching opportunities.
  5. Report directly to the CEO and undertake additional responsibilities as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES

Qualifications

  1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution; further training or certifications are preferred.
  2. Over 5 years of experience in development, fundraising, or mission-driven philanthropy.
  3. A proven history of successful fundraising and leading a development team to meet established objectives.
  4. Familiarity with community-oriented and grassroots philanthropy.
  5. Experience with diverse fundraising strategies and donor stewardship, including major gifts and community partnerships.
  6. A skilled people manager with the ability to lead and develop other fundraisers.
