Advanced Practice Provider in Thoracic Surgery

Position Overview:
Northwestern Medicine is seeking a dedicated Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to become an integral part of our esteemed Thoracic Surgery Team at The Canning Thoracic Institute (CTI).
About the Institute:
CTI collaborates across the Northwestern Medicine health system, striving to fulfill our mission of delivering exceptional care for patients with thoracic conditions, fostering clinical innovation, and enhancing lung health within the Greater Chicago Community.
Role Focus:
This position emphasizes care for patients experiencing Advanced Lung Failure, particularly those undergoing Lung Transplant and ECMO procedures. The APP will work closely with our Lung Transplant Team to support the expansion of our Lung Transplant Program.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide critical care management in the CTICU, both pre and post-transplant, as well as on the surgical floor to ensure continuity of patient care.
- Conduct daily patient rounds and develop comprehensive care plans.
- Coordinate care with interdisciplinary team members and specialists.
- Perform essential procedures, including bronchoscopy and chest tube placement.
- Manage ventilators and ECMO as part of patient treatment.
Work Schedule:
This role operates on a 4x10 schedule, with occasional weekend shifts and future vacation coverage as staffing allows. There are no night shifts or on-call duties.
Essential Functions:
- Exhibit clinical expertise through patient care activities, including diagnosis and management of diverse health issues.
- Collaborate with physicians and healthcare professionals to ensure optimal health outcomes for assigned patient populations.
- Develop educational resources for patients, families, and staff in areas of expertise.
- Mentor graduate students in advanced practice and patient care methodologies.
- Engage in quality improvement initiatives and/or research relevant to the specialty.
Qualifications:
- Conduct thorough health assessments through detailed histories and physical examinations.
- Provide direct clinical care, including prescribing medications and therapies, and ordering/interpreting diagnostic tests.
- Evaluate patient needs for further healthcare services and provide comprehensive education to patients and families.
- Maintain accurate documentation of all care and procedures performed.
- Serve as a consultant to other disciplines and advocate for patients, families, and the community.
Professional Development:
- Uphold certifications and continuing education requirements for licensure and privileging.
- Participate in departmental committees and task forces as appropriate.
- Develop and implement educational programs to address the continuing education needs of staff.
