Job Title: Associate Counsel

The Newark Board of Education is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Associate Counsel to join its Office of the General Counsel. As a key member of the legal team, the successful candidate will provide expert legal advice and representation to the District on a wide range of matters.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Represent the District in litigations and legal matters, including interviews with fact witnesses, maintenance of files and exhibits, and preparation of legal documents.
  • Engage in special education mediation and due process hearings, and participate in all facets of special education matters that involve counsel.
  • Rend appropriate day-to-day oral and written legal advice and guidance to District administrators on matters of a legal nature or major significance.
  • Prepare memoranda, pleadings, trial and appellate briefs, revise policies, and legal and general correspondence for the signature of the Superintendent, General Counsel, or other administrators.
  • Represent the District at meetings, serve on committees, and engage in projects as directed by the General Counsel.
Requirements:
  • Admission to practice law in the State of New Jersey.
  • Three to five years of experience in the practice of law, including representation of school districts before courts and administrative agencies.
  • Demonstrated experience in areas of special education, student-related issues, labor/employment litigation, and the Public School Contracts Law.
  • Proficiency in Lexis, Westlaw, Word, Windows, Excel, and Power Point.
  • Legal research and writing experience, as outlined in two writing samples.
  • Working knowledge of federal and state laws applicable to school districts in New Jersey.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
  • A driver's license valid in New Jersey.
