Job Overview:
Position Summary

This role is situated within the surgical unit of a healthcare facility, where the individual performs a range of technical responsibilities as a scrub technician, playing a vital role within the surgical team.

The position may involve working various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Primary Responsibilities:
Support the surgeon in the capacity of a scrub technician:

  • Prepare by scrubbing, donning gown and gloves.
  • Establish a sterile environment with draping, instruments, and supplies tailored to the specific operation and surgeon's preferences.
  • Collect specialized instruments and/or equipment necessary for diverse surgical procedures.
  • Assist in patient transfers, including moving from stretcher to operating table, and aid in patient positioning.
  • Prepare and drape the patient and surgical area.
  • Anticipate and assist with the surgeon's needs (e.g., passing instruments and sterile supplies, holding retractors).
  • Maintain accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments alongside the circulating nurse, reporting any discrepancies.
  • Uphold aseptic techniques consistently to safeguard the sterile field.
  • Assist in the management of specimens (e.g., identifying and handing specimens to the circulating nurse, preparing slides).

Additional Duties:
Beyond the primary responsibilities, this position may involve:
  • Handling equipment and materials correctly to ensure their usability and safety.
  • Maintaining adequate supplies in the surgical suite to ensure availability during procedures.
  • Cleaning, storing, packing, and autoclaving instruments in the designated work area.
  • Keeping an inventory of supplies and equipment to ensure readiness.
  • Distributing supplies to rooms and suites as directed based on usage and requirements.
  • Assisting in patient transfers from bed to gurney and transporting them to and from the surgical suite as needed.
  • Ensuring the provision of clean gurneys and linens for each patient.
  • Identifying patients and receiving instructions from unit personnel upon patient arrival.
  • Observing and monitoring patients continuously to maintain a safe environment.
  • Cleaning the surgical room, furniture, and equipment according to established procedures.

This role requires a commitment to maintaining high standards of performance and education through participation in in-service meetings and contributions to staff development and procedural revisions.
