Position Overview

The Law Clerk II serves under the Director of Research and Evaluation within the Information Services Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois. This role demands a strong dedication to ensuring equitable access to justice, maintaining a professional demeanor, and exercising sound judgment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the legal assessment of case processing across various case types to guarantee adherence to Illinois Supreme Court Time Standards.
  • Conduct internal audits of judicial orders documented in the Clerk's case management system.
  • Review judicial orders for accuracy in the electronic docket and propose corrective measures or enhancements.
  • Research legal statutes, court regulations, and legal documents to gather information and provide analytical insights relevant to case processing protocols.
  • Occasionally travel to courthouses to inspect physical files in addition to reviewing electronic records.
  • Identify operational bottlenecks and recommend strategies to enhance efficiency.
  • Draft written memoranda, summaries, and recommendations based on research and analysis of docket entry and case processing challenges.
  • Engage with department heads, presiding judges, and court clerks to rectify inaccuracies in electronic records and improve case processing timelines.
  • Support miscellaneous tasks as directed by judges or supervisors.
  • Uphold confidentiality in all duties performed.
  • Execute additional responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and Juris Doctor degree with an active Illinois law license.
  • At least 2 years of experience in criminal or civil law practice preferred, or substantial experience in a legal support role prior to law school.
  • Proficient in legal research methodologies and analysis of relevant laws.
  • Familiarity with computer applications for word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and legal research/writing.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills along with strong organizational capabilities.
  • Able to collaborate effectively with both legal and non-legal personnel in a professional manner.
Working Conditions
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk in front of a computer.
  • Occasional twisting to access equipment or supplies.
  • Ability to perform simple grasping and fine manipulation tasks.
  • Capacity to lift files weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Regular use of telephone and computer keyboard.
