Job Overview:

The Automation and Controls Specialist is a key role focusing on developing, maintaining, and optimizing automated manufacturing systems. Reporting to the Manager of Manufacturing Engineering, this position supports production, maintenance, and process teams across multiple facilities.

The specialist will drive automation projects, enhance equipment efficiency, and ensure safety and quality standards are met while providing technical training and support to personnel.


Key Responsibilities:
Automate manufacturing processes and justify ROI for projects.
Lead and develop automation projects for manufacturing and packaging operations.
Identify, select, and manage vendors for automated systems and components.
Troubleshoot and resolve control system issues and manage control projects.
Develop and document PLC control systems from concept to qualification.
Maintain and troubleshoot PLC/SCADA logic and control system wiring.
Integrate and test hardware/software components like robots, sensors, and vision systems.
Implement quality improvement projects using vision systems like Cognex InSight.
Design compliant industrial electrical control panels and create associated schematics.
Manage electrical cabinet builds, field wiring, and pneumatic plumbing.
Coordinate third-party contractor support for electrical operations.
Collaborate with engineering teams to improve control technology for enhanced safety and functionality.
Provide ongoing support to plant operations and maintenance departments.
Maintain effective communication with various departments within the organization.

Requirements Include:

Education:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical, Chemical, or Mechanical preferred).

Experience:
Minimum of 2-4 years as an Automation/Controls Engineer in a regulated industry.
Experience in a cGMP facility is preferred.
Robotics and automation engineering experience required.

Skills:
Strong electrical troubleshooting and PLC programming skills.
Proficient in CAD, SPC, and Gantt Charts.
Experience with ERP systems (design, testing, and implementation preferred).
Strong mechanical aptitude and a comprehensive understanding of electrical systems.

Certifications:
Certification in Lean Manufacturing preferred.
Six Sigma certification (green/black belt) preferred.

Knowledge:
Expertise in manufacturing-based applications, root cause analysis techniques, and failure mode and effect analysis.
Familiarity with process control issues and developing solutions to enhance manufacturing processes.

Key Competencies:
Strong problem-solving and applied statistics skills.
Ability to troubleshoot, define, and resolve technical issues efficiently.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact with all staff levels.
Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize tasks and work independently.
Supervisory experience and ability to lead internal teams and vendors.

Work Environment:
Office and manufacturing facility environment with regular exposure to production equipment.

Travel Requirements:
Minimal travel may be required for vendor meetings or project coordination.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Lead internal groups and manage contracted vendors on automation and controls projects.
