Job Title: Chief Executive Officer

The Institute for Nonprofit News is seeking a visionary and entrepreneurial leader to serve as the Chief Executive Officer of our Los Angeles Local News Initiative. As the founding CEO, you will be responsible for developing and implementing a strategic plan to establish a trusted news source in Los Angeles, serving the diverse needs of the community.

About the Role:

The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of Los Angeles' unique challenges and a passion for fostering a more equitable and engaged media landscape. With a strong background in nonprofit management, media, or for-profit sectors, you will craft a bold strategy to build a sustainable, local, community-focused organization.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop a five-year strategic plan, including building a fundraising strategy and defining strategic and hiring priorities in line with the editorial mission.
  • Ensure diversity is a key part of the organization's framework, and that equity and inclusion are ingrained in the organization's strategic vision, including when it comes to hiring, retention, compensation, and coverage.
  • Lead and inspire staff to meet the goals of the organization's strategic vision while also supporting the needs of the community they serve.
  • Support editorial leaders in the design, implementation, and management of daily newsroom operations that can produce strong, community-oriented accountability journalism where ground-level stakeholders are involved in shaping news stories.
  • Develop a brand strategy to bring awareness to the organization's vision and increase its readership, including leading a full renaming and brand development exercise upon assumption of the role.
Requirements:
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with experience in nonprofit management, media, or for-profit sectors.
  • Deep understanding of Los Angeles' unique challenges and a passion for fostering a more equitable and engaged media landscape.
  • Proven ability to secure funding from foundations, individual donors, corporate sponsors, and government grants.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders, including the Board of Directors, staff, funders, and community partners.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a high-performing Board of Directors, leveraging their expertise to ensure strong governance and organizational growth.
