Job Title: Feeder Operator

Join our team as a Feeder Operator at TSG - The Sheridan Group, where you will play a crucial role in the production of heat-set web printed materials.

Job Summary:

As a Feeder Operator, you will assist the Operator in the production process, ensuring the smooth operation of web presses and maintaining the quality of printed materials. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Reading and understanding work orders to verify correct substrate, bind type, ink color, and run lengths.
  • Ordering substrate while considering the needs of the oncoming shift.
  • Setting up stacker and bundler to send adequate and well-identified bundles to the bindery.
  • Understanding substrate characteristics, including weights, PPI, size, grain direction, coating, marking, and storage.
  • Loading correct substrate into the machine while tracking slab-off, waste consumption, and return weights.
  • Learning all phases of the press operation.
  • Ensuring bundles conform to bindery needs, including proper identification.
  • Properly disposing of waste, including printed and blank substrate.
  • Safely stacking and wrapping skids before leaving the press area.
  • Interpreting work order information and its contents.
  • Assisting the Operator as needed.
  • Running the press effectively in the temporary absence of the Operator.
  • Assisting maintenance personnel with machine repair.
  • Exercising initiative, asking questions, and looking for ways to improve productivity.
  • Keeping the area safe and clean.
  • Adequately communicating with the oncoming shift.
  • Performing end-of-shift duties, leaving the area ready for the oncoming shift.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education or experience.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents, such as work orders, workplace and safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, and ability to use a measuring device.
  • Basic problem-solving skills.
Preferred Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to work with Microsoft Office, Flex, and PrintStream at a beginning level.
  • Effective email and electronic communication skills.
  • Ability to work with various tools and machinery, including pallet jacks, paper turning discs, knives, pallet wrap holders, vacuum lifts, plate benders, plate carts, hand tools, grease guns, air hose nozzles, and shaft handling carts.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. frequently and 20 lbs. constantly.
  • Adjusting or moving objects up to 50 lbs. in all directions.
  • Constantly working in the work activities.
  • Moving to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • Operating machines and/or power tools.
  • Working in noisy environments.
  • Occasionally performing listed activities.
  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like.
  • Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments, including tight spaces.
  • Remaining in stationary positions, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
  • Working in high temperatures and small or enclosed spaces.
