Position Overview:
We are in search of a Lead Senior Structural Design Engineer to contribute to the New Glenn Second Stage Tanks projects. This role is pivotal in spearheading a lean engineering initiative that aims to enhance new space capabilities. You will manage a specialized team of engineers across various disciplines to expedite the design and development process, while also innovating upon the existing New Glenn Stage 2 design.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the structural design and configuration of propellant tanks, internal structures, and interfaces.
- Conduct detailed design, analysis, development, and testing of primary and secondary structures exposed to cryogenic conditions.
- Create 3D models, detailed part drawings, assemblies, and interface control documents in accordance with both internal and external specifications.
- Collaborate across business units and functional organizations to achieve project deliverables, acting as a liaison between various internal and external partners.
- Prepare project summary presentations and memos for executive review and internal team discussions.
- Regularly report on performance metrics related to schedule, resources, cost, and technical performance.
- Engage in subsystem test planning, execution, data analysis, and reduction.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers, facilitating their integration into the team.
- Offer on-site manufacturing and production support as required.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in aerospace, mechanical, or systems engineering, with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience.
- U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency is required.
- Demonstrated program and technical leadership experience in aerospace development, particularly in the full lifecycle of aerospace systems.
- Exceptional organizational skills and proficiency in technical communication, both written and verbal.
- Adept at navigating a fast-paced, dynamic work environment with the ability to travel as necessary.
- Experience with complex, minimally defined requirements and a proven ability to foster trust and maintain professional relationships.
- Familiarity with launch vehicles or aircraft, particularly in areas such as:
- Design of lightweight structures, especially pressurized systems.
- Design of interfaces for fluid systems.
- Material development and structural testing.
- Structural design of metallic components.
- Load path distribution and strength assessment.
- Strong understanding of material selection and manufacturing techniques.
- Proficient in mechanical design software such as Creo and CATIA V5.
- Experience in structural analysis using classical methods and finite element techniques.
- Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (ASME Y14.5).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build consensus among stakeholders.
- Experience with rapid hardware development techniques.
- Familiarity with welding and forming processes.
- Expertise in industry-standard analysis software such as Ansys or Nastran.
- Experience in developing manufacturing processes for production.
- Knowledge of systems engineering practices and quality control.
- Experience with optimization methods applied to design and testing.
- Experience in multi-functional teams for material selection and manufacturing processes.
