Position Overview:


Under the close guidance of a Registered Nurse or physician, the Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) delivers nursing care in alignment with the legal scope of practice and within the established standards of care, policies, and procedures. This role exemplifies performance that is consistent with the Mission, Vision, and Strategic Plan of Kaiser Permanente.

Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice, treating co-workers, patients, families, and all members of the healthcare team with dignity and respect.


Key Responsibilities:
Adheres to Kaiser Permanente's Policies and Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities, and relevant state, federal, and local regulations.
Conducts patient care activities within the scope of competency, taking into account the age-related needs of patients as prescribed by healthcare professionals, while following established protocols, policies, and procedures.
Assists medical staff with special procedures, minor surgical interventions, and diagnostic examinations.
Evaluates and monitors patient conditions, promptly notifying the physician or healthcare professional for further action.
Prepares and administers medications as directed by physician orders, adhering to established protocols.
Maintains medical equipment and supplies, identifying and arranging for necessary repairs.
Applies principles of aseptic technique and infection control as outlined in the Infection Control Manual.
Oversees patient flow and directs ancillary personnel as required.
Provides medical information and education to patients, adhering to established guidelines.
Documents relevant patient information, assessments, and nursing procedures according to established protocols.
Ensures patient confidentiality is maintained.
Performs additional duties as assigned.

Patient Care Procedures:
Explains the purpose and process of examinations, tests, and medical procedures to patients, following established guidelines.
Instructs patients on general health and basic self-care practices.
Clarifies physician orders with patients.
Instructs patients on the use of home medical equipment.
Administers first aid to patients.
Applies basic orthopedic devices as ordered by the physician.
Executes treatments such as urinary catheterization, bladder irrigations, suction procedures, and throat irrigations.
Follows standard infection control protocols.
Administers enemas and initiates emergency procedures, including basic CPR, providing emergency treatments as necessary.
Lifts and assists patients as needed.
Monitors vital signs and observes patients for any adverse reactions during and after procedures.
Administers inhalation therapy and participates in the development of nursing care plans.
Prepares and positions patients for examinations and procedures.
Provides therapeutic care as directed by the physician.
Maintains a clean work environment and monitors the supply of medical gases.
Completes laboratory and radiology requisitions and notifies appropriate personnel of abnormal lab results.
Responds to patient inquiries and assists with specimen collection and processing.

Administrative Duties:
Requests medical records and manages patient appointment scheduling.
Initiates follow-up appointments and checks in patients.
Maintains department logs and updates protocol manuals.
Orders medical supplies and manages inventory.
Participates in departmental meetings and training sessions.
Serves as a resource for coworkers, assisting with procedural questions and problem-solving.
