Position Overview

The Electrical Systems Research Engineer will focus on the design and development of control systems for pioneering automated material handling machinery and systems. This role involves creating concepts, algorithms, and schematics for material handling equipment. The engineer will collaborate with a multidisciplinary development team, including mechanical and electrical engineers, to design and construct comprehensive mechatronic prototypes and systems. They will provide expertise and guidance on control system architecture, network design, electrical schematics, and power distribution. The engineer will be tasked with writing control code (PLC, IPC) and generating electrical diagrams. Additionally, they will engage in the company's New Product Development process to establish requirements, draft specifications, and produce engineering documentation necessary for risk assessments, testing reports, equipment certifications, commissioning protocols, troubleshooting, and training. Support for production and deployment teams will be essential to ensure a seamless transition of new products from prototype to full-scale production.

Key Responsibilities

  • Exemplify leadership in alignment with Aegis' Mission, Vision, and Core Values.
  • Investigate and assess new electrical control technologies and devices.
  • Specify electrical hardware and control devices according to application needs, including PLC components, servo and VFD controllers, and field IO devices.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with distributed control solutions utilizing established IO networks such as Ethernet IP, ProfiNet, Sercos, and IO link.
  • Lead the design of comprehensive control solutions for complex automated systems.
  • Utilize kinematic equations of motion to develop algorithms and timing parameters for material handling controls.
  • Create and implement machine control software based on platforms such as Rockwell, Schneider, Siemens, or other industrial control systems.
  • Design electrical control panels for R&D projects using AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Generate detailed documentation to facilitate the transition of R&D products to production and deployment teams.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of customer operations and specifications.
  • Communicate effectively and collaborate with R&D team members to achieve project objectives.
  • Exhibit self-motivation and attention to detail in designing and developing next-generation products with minimal oversight.
  • Comprehend complex systems and processes at a high level of detail.
  • Meet deadlines while ensuring accuracy and adherence to budget and schedule.
  • Mentor and guide less experienced engineers through instruction and example.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally (less than 25%).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in industrial automation.
  • Expertise in Rockwell, Schneider, or Siemens industrial control products.
  • Experience troubleshooting 460 VAC and 24 VDC control systems using tools such as multi-meters and oscilloscopes.
  • Familiarity with LEAN and/or AGILE methodologies is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical.
