Job Summary

The Mechanical Designer designs and details mechanical components systems under the guidance of engineering management.

This mid-level position is responsible for the integrity, quality, and proper operation of designs from concept through manufacture, assembly, test, and field installation.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Participate as a team member with other Engineers, Drafters, Manufacturing, Production, and Purchasing personnel to complete design projects on time and within budget.
  2. Coordinate project tasks and schedules, delegate work to drafters and support staff as required.
  3. Responsible for design and manufacturing support.
  4. Responsible for specification compliance and documentation of mechanical systems, subassemblies, and components.
  5. Responsible for the layout and detailed mechanical designs.
  6. Drive projects involving new concepts and approaches to the design of new products.
  7. Recommend materials and components for inclusion in design specifications based on experience and on catalogue reference data.
  8. Solve technical problems with equipment in the field, provide technical expertise to the organization, work with and develop suppliers, interact and direct engineering activities.
  9. Study industry standards and ensure that designs are safe and meet applicable industry safety requirements.
  10. Actively Participate in Design Reviews.
  11. Review designs with other Engineering, Manufacturing, Production personnel as well as equipment users to ensure that designs meet all requirements.
  12. Prepare and present written, oral, and visual material to support proposals, presentations, design reviews, and written reports.
  13. Develop cost estimates for proposed projects which include labor and material costs.
  14. Organize and maintain project folders and report project status to Manager, Engineers, and others on a regular basis.
  15. Must keep technical information updates and organize through configuration management for the department.
  16. Plan, perform, or direct and document experiments to prove design performance.
  17. Deal with work-processes, optimization methods, and risk management tools in such projects.
  18. Coach and mentor drafters and junior engineers.
  19. Must be capable of safely handling government-furnished equipment and materials.
  20. Must be available to work a standard weekly schedule with overtime as required.
  21. Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of 3D Mechanical CAD including detail drawings/models and applying large assembly management skills.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to clearly explain the perspective of the engineering department to upper management as well as to the engineering team.
  • Apply intensive and diversified knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and practices.
  • Able to make decisions independently on engineering problems.
  • Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Able to handle multiple projects and tasks concurrently.
  • Understanding of sheet metal and machined part fabrication practices and documentation standards.
  • Strong ability to work with others and be an active part of a cross-functional team.
  • Identify complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with the ability to prioritize, manage multiple projects, and work to a schedule.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Solidworks, AutoCAD, or other 3D modeling software, Solidworks Simulation, EPDM Configuration Management.
  • Preferred working experience with Faro Arm 3D Scanner and Geomagic Design X software.
  • Preferred experience in 3D Printing, Additive Manufacturing, and Rapid Prototyping.
  • Must be able to obtain a security clearance when required by the contract.
Education and Experience

Associate degree in a related field or a certification from a technical institute or equivalent.

Eight (8) years drafting experience.

Two (2) years of experience as a mechanical drafter.
