About the Role

The Syracuse City School District is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Community Safety Agent to join our team. As a Community Safety Agent, you will play a critical role in maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for our students, staff, and community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide protection for District students, staff, and the greater school community
  • Enforce the District's public safety/security program and the laws of the State of New York
  • Maintain order through a uniform presence on the school campus at all times
  • Respond to campus emergencies and provide First Aid/CPR as needed
  • Patrol buildings, grounds, and parking areas to maintain order, protect persons and property, control traffic, and prevent trespassing, theft, or damage
  • Secure and check all doors, windows, and entrances to buildings
  • Complete Administrative Entry Searches for weapons as per established procedures
  • Control and direct traffic on campus or adjacent roads, grounds, and parking areas
  • Investigate motor vehicle accidents that occur on campus or campus-related property
  • Coordinate with all juvenile justice support agencies
  • Issue parking violation tickets and actively monitor areas to enforce safe routes to school
  • Provide law enforcement guidance to students, staff, and administrators
  • Provide assistance and training to students, faculty, and staff
  • Consult with building administrators and/or parents/guardians regarding the status of the campus public safety/security program
  • Prepare records and reports related to the work performed
Requirements
  • Good knowledge of procedures and practices for protecting and safeguarding buildings and property
  • Good knowledge of the powers of a peace officer
  • Ability to maintain order
  • Ability to perform first aid
  • Ability to exercise judgment and common sense in stressful situations
  • Ability to carry out established security procedures in case of fire, bomb threat, or other emergency situations
  • Ability to observe detail, remember facts and information, and evaluate situations
  • Ability to understand oral and written instructions and apply information, rules, regulations, and procedures to specific situations
  • Ability to prepare brief written communications
  • Ability to communicate information orally to the public or related personnel
  • Ability to use self-defense, restraint techniques, and security equipment
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position
Qualifications
  • Retired member of a police or sheriff's department, or division of state police, or retired former corrections, parole, or probation officer
  • Subject to New York State Education Department fingerprint Background Check Clearance for appointment
