Job Overview:

Under the general oversight of the Director and Clinical Manager, the Registered Nurse is accountable for delivering high-quality patient care through the nursing process. This role includes supervising other nursing staff and managing the operations of the assigned unit during scheduled shifts. The position may require call back and overtime as needed by the healthcare facility.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts initial patient evaluations using the nursing process, tailoring care plans to meet individual patient needs, and ensures seamless communication with other shifts and departments to maintain continuity of care.
  • Records initial assessments, patient care delivery, and relevant information in the patient's medical records, while overseeing the documentation performed by other staff members.
  • Coordinates and executes bedside care for patients, performing, assisting, or delegating skilled procedures as necessary.
  • Administers or oversees the administration of scheduled and as-needed medications, intravenous fluids, blood, and blood products.
  • Notifies physicians of patient admissions, overall condition, and significant physical and emotional observations, assisting with treatments, examinations, and patient rounds as required.
  • Supervises the patient care provided by nursing personnel, evaluates daily care standards on the assigned shift, assigns tasks based on patient acuity and staff competency, and ensures accurate transcription of orders.
  • Prioritizes physician orders effectively.
  • Engages with patients and their families, collaborating with other disciplines to provide emotional support, education, and discharge planning.
  • Checks emergency equipment and medications on the unit each shift as assigned or necessary.
  • Acts as the primary caregiver, team leader, or charge nurse when designated, delegating responsibilities to support staff assigned to the unit.
  • Facilitates the orientation of new personnel to the unit and serves as a role model as needed.
  • Communicates patient and unit operation information to other shifts and management, utilizing proper communication channels with other hospital departments.
  • Provides information or assistance to ambulance personnel, law enforcement, community agencies, allied health groups, or support organizations in accordance with unit policies and procedures.
  • Performs related duties as required or directed.
  • Ensures the proper segregation and safe disposal of hazardous pharmaceutical waste.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Completion of a baccalaureate degree in nursing is required.

Licensure, Registration, Certification:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse as approved by the relevant state board of nursing.
  • Responsible for maintaining Continuing Education Units annually.
  • BLS certification must be obtained during the orientation period and kept current while in this role.
  • ACLS certification is required.
  • NRP certification must be obtained within one year of employment, with recertification maintained as required.
  • Certification in a clinical specialty area by a recognized authority is desirable.
  • Additional certifications may be mandated at the discretion of the department.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in the principles, concepts, and techniques of nursing as typically acquired through a baccalaureate degree in nursing.
  • Familiarity with hospital policies and procedures and completion of skills checklists for designated areas as acquired during the probationary period.
  • Basic computer skills are preferred.
