Your Role

The Assistant Production Manager is tasked with acquiring, demonstrating, and mastering the knowledge and skills necessary to become certified in all aspects of company operations and industry standards. This role operates under the guidance of the designated department leader while engaging in a comprehensive learning and development process.

Key Responsibilities
  • Acquire knowledge and demonstrate proficiency in all farm department functions, fulfilling the requirements outlined in the Breeding/Farrowing and Nursery/Finishing job descriptions.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of and ability to implement company systems, including pig production processes, animal flow, farm health, genetics, and husbandry.
  • Perform and excel in all hourly roles under supervision, achieving certification in each position upon demonstrating competence and understanding.
  • Compile and present reports on experiences encountered, addressing and sharing opportunities for enhancement.
  • Ensure compliance with all environmental regulations and procedures endorsed by Smithfield LLC.
  • Complete Leadership Certification as required.
  • Understand and adhere to company policies regarding IPS, biosecurity, animal welfare, and EMS in job performance.
  • Promptly report any environmental, animal care, and biosecurity concerns to the supervisor.
  • Assume responsibilities as the acting Head of Department as needed by management.
  • Be available for emergency situations, including alarm calls, inclement weather, power outages, personnel shortages, and environmental crises.
  • Advance in the Manager Training development program, reporting any issues that may hinder completion to Human Resources.

Qualifications

  • A four-year degree in Animal Science or a related Agricultural field, or equivalent supervisory experience and/or previous swine experience; or a combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to work an average of 48 hours per week, with frequent variations.
  • Availability for weekend, evening, and holiday work as needed.
  • Daily showering in and out of farm facilities is required.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities.
  • Willingness to relocate for training and to assume the first managerial role.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft software and computer literacy.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Respectful, approachable, and team-oriented, fostering strong working relationships and a positive workplace.
  • Supportive of the mission to raise swine for high-quality pork production.
  • Willingness to learn and perform tasks such as euthanasia, castration, vaccinations, piglet processing, ear tagging, and blood sampling, which are standard in animal husbandry.
  • Capability to operate a high-pressure washing system.
