Nursing Unit Manager

Job Summary:
The Nursing Unit Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day nursing activities of the Facility during their tour of duty. This includes supervising nursing staff, ensuring quality care is maintained, and adhering to federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations.
Key Responsibilities:- Administrative Functions:
- Assist the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing activities.
- Participate in developing, maintaining, and updating written policies and procedures.
- Ensure that reference material is current and recommend written material to assist the nursing service department.
- Committee Functions:
- Attend various committee meetings of the Facility.
- Assist in preparing written and/or oral reports of the nursing service programs and activities.
- Personnel Functions:
- Ensure that a sufficient number of licensed practical and/or registered nurses are available for your tour of duty.
- Develop work assignments and delegate administrative authority to LPNs and RNs.
- Nursing Care Functions:
- Inform nursing service personnel of new admissions and ensure rooms are ready.
- Make rounds with physicians and encourage timely recording of progress notes.
- Staff Development:
- Participate in developing, planning, conducting, and scheduling in-service training classes.
- Develop and implement an effective orientation program.
- Safety and Sanitation:
- Assist in developing safety standards for the nursing service department.
- Ensure that all personnel follow established safety regulations and procedures.
- Equipment and Supply Functions:
- Recommend equipment and supply needs to the Director.
- Ensure an adequate stock level of medications, medical supplies, and equipment.
- Care Plan and Assessment Functions:
- Participate in developing written preliminary and comprehensive assessments of the nursing needs of each resident.
- Review resident care plans for appropriateness and ensure nursing personnel refer to the plan prior to administering daily care.
- Budget and Planning Functions:
- Keep abreast of economic conditions and recommend adjustments in nursing services to ensure quality care.
- Resident Rights:
- Ensure that all nursing service personnel are knowledgeable of the residents' responsibilities and rights.
- Review complaints and grievances made by residents and make a written or oral report to the Director.
Requirements:
- Nursing Degree from an accredited college or university or be a graduate of an approved LPN/LVN program.
- Must have, as a minimum, one (1) year of experience as a supervisor in a hospital, nursing care facility, or other related health care facility.
- Must possess a current, unencumbered, active license to practice as an RN or LPN/LVN in this state.
Working Conditions:
- Works in office area(s) as well as throughout the nursing service area.
- Is involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies, or personnel, etc., under all conditions and circumstances.
