Department Overview

The Infrastructure and Sustainability Department at Georgia Tech is seeking Facilities Specialist Apprentices. This role is pivotal in supporting the operational integrity of various facilities. As the complexity of building systems increases, the demand for skilled Facilities Specialists continues to grow, providing numerous career pathways within the Facilities Services sector.

This full-time position is part of an apprenticeship program recognized by the US Department of Labor, designed to span two years with competency-based wage increments. Apprentices will gain practical experience while having access to necessary coursework, which will require a commitment of 2-3 hours weekly.

Position Summary

The apprentice will work closely with seasoned maintenance professionals to acquire a diverse skill set in facility upkeep and repair. Responsibilities include:

  1. Maintaining registration in the Facilities Specialist Apprenticeship Program by achieving the outlined goals and competencies.
  2. Assisting in routine inspections and preventive maintenance across various systems, including electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical.
  3. Participating in troubleshooting and repairs of equipment malfunctions.
  4. Learning to perform regular maintenance tasks, such as lubricating machinery and replacing filters.
  5. Supporting general repairs on building structures, including painting and carpentry.
  6. Documenting maintenance logs and service histories.
  7. Engaging in safety inspections and adhering to safety protocols.
  8. Attending training sessions to enhance technical skills.
  9. Performing additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Educational Requirements: High School Diploma/GED or Vocational School Diploma.

Other Required Qualifications: Must be accepted into the Facilities Specialist Apprenticeship Program. A valid Driver's License is necessary. Candidates should be prepared for physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy objects and working in various environments.

Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong desire to learn, possess basic mechanical knowledge, and exhibit excellent communication skills. Attention to detail and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are essential.
