Rivian is seeking a highly skilled Battery Cell Development Engineer to lead the cell development and integration for our electric vehicles. This is a unique opportunity to drive innovation and contribute to the development of cutting-edge battery technology.
Job Summary: The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the development of battery cells from design concept to mass production. This will involve collaborating with cross-functional teams to decompose vehicle requirements into cell specifications, working with suppliers to design and evaluate cell technology, and developing testing methods to evaluate various lithium-ion battery cell chemistries.
Responsibilities:
- Lead cell development from design concept to mass production.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to decompose vehicle requirements into cell specifications.
- Work with suppliers to design and evaluate cell technology that meets Rivian's requirements for different applications.
- Develop and execute testing methods to evaluate various lithium-ion battery cell chemistries.
- Drive the decision for cell selection based on test results.
- Collaborate with modeling engineers to extract parameters from cells to help build and validate models.
- Use electrochemical techniques to identify cell degradation mechanisms.
- Use cell testing data to support control estimation algorithms used in battery management systems.
- Work with pack design engineers to define pathways to improve cell/pack design with enhanced performance and lifetime.
- Develop intellectual property for Rivian battery cell technology.
- Conduct cell failure analysis for cell-related field issues.
Qualifications:
- MS degree in chemistry/chemical engineering/materials science with 5+ years of experience with hands-on testing of lithium-ion batteries.
- Demonstrated experience in characterizing lithium-ion cells.
- Strong understanding of electrochemistry properties of lithium-ion batteries.
- Familiarity with dQdV, dVdQ.
- Hands-on experience/knowledge in electrochemical techniques such as EIS, GITT, CV, PITT.
- Strong understanding of cell components and their interactions inside the cell.
- Good understanding of cell design.
- Strong understanding of electrochemical processes in various lithium-ion chemistries.
- Excellent knowledge of development trends in lithium-ion batteries.
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision and collaborate well in a team.
- Passion for research/work in lithium-ion batteries, especially in EVs.
- Good communication and project/time management skills.
Estimated Salary: $137,000 - $172,000 per year (based on location and experience).
