The Office of Radiation Protection plays a crucial role in this mission by ensuring that the public is safeguarded from the detrimental effects of ionizing radiation. This role is vital in overseeing and guiding the Waste Management Section's technical and support personnel to guarantee that radiation exposure from various operations is minimized to the lowest possible levels.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership of the Waste Management Section: Direct and manage staff to ensure adherence to state regulations concerning uranium mill facilities, radioactive waste processors, and disposal site operators.
  • Radiation Exposure Mitigation: Implement effective licensing and enforcement measures to reduce radiation exposure.
  • Quality Assurance: Conduct supervisory reviews of technical documents, ensuring accuracy and completeness post-staff review.
  • Technical Documentation: Ensure the timely completion of technical memos for all licensing actions and regulatory decisions.
  • Inspection Coordination: Collaborate with program managers to guarantee all necessary inspections are performed.
  • NRC Compliance: Maintain adherence to NRC requirements for Low-Level Radioactive Waste (LLRW) and uranium recovery programs.
  • Rulemaking Monitoring: Stay updated on NRC rulemaking and provide feedback on proposed regulations.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Participate in essential training and drills related to radiological emergencies.

Staff Development and Team Collaboration:

Provide mentorship and guidance to team members regarding work expectations, safety practices, and radiation safety principles. Promote a culture of teamwork, accountability, and collaboration among staff and section leaders.

Work Environment:

This position is based in Washington, with expectations for partial telecommuting. The incumbent will work in the office a few days each month.
