Responsibilities & Requirements
We require an experienced Medical Coding Specialist to join our team, responsible for coding and abstracting all inpatient and outpatient patient records using ICD-9-CM and CPT/HCPCS coding rules, federal guidelines, and KMCN guidelines. This role supports hospital accounts receivable goals through timely processing of records and physician record completion activities, impacting delivery of quality patient care and enhanced clinical decision-making processes.
This position requires:
* Identifying potential reimbursement issues and taking corrective action to minimize financial losses;
* Maintaining office equipment necessary for efficient processing of patient information and documents;
* Preparing and billing accounts promptly, ensuring accuracy and completeness;
* Directing patients toward appropriate payment options when needed;
* Initiating financial evaluations for uninsured or underinsured patients;
* Evaluating accounts to ensure all third-party reimbursements have been exhausted;
* Following up on accounts at proper intervals;
* Researching credit balances to assess disposition of funds and process according to departmental policy;
* Evaluating and submitting accounts for appropriate disposition or preparation for outsourcing;
* Performing other administrative responsibilities as assigned, including but not limited to sending and receiving faxes, researching, following up with and answering questions for patients and staff, file maintenance, creating reports, memos, and forms, maintaining inventory and office supplies.
Job Requirements
To be successful in this role, you must possess:
* A high school diploma or equivalent;
* Previous finance, accounting, or billing experience;
* The ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion;
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
* Ability to comprehend established office routines and policies;
* Good organizational skills;
Preferred Qualifications
Prior post-high school training in finance, billing, or accounting is preferred, as well as previous experience in a medical environment. Knowledge of medical terminology, CPT, and ICD-9 coding is also highly desirable.
