The Louisiana Department of Revenue (LDR) plays a crucial role in the equitable and effective collection of state tax revenues, which are essential for funding public services, regulating charitable gaming, and overseeing the sale of alcoholic beverages and tobacco. Additionally, LDR supports state agencies in recovering overdue debts.

Each program, unit, division, and group within LDR collaborates to deliver core services to the taxpayers of Louisiana and the agency's stakeholders.


ABOUT THIS ROLE:


The selected candidate will be part of the Data Capture and Correction section of the Revenue Processing Center (RPC), tasked with performing intermediary processing functions to accurately capture taxpayer return data and related information before it is transmitted to the Revenue Information System.

A comprehensive understanding of the filing requirements and form types for all 38 taxes managed by LDR is vital for executing job responsibilities effectively.

Moreover, the Data Capture and Correction section is responsible for generating deposit files by entering critical deposit data from documents scanned by the System Operations Section and rectifying any misread or unread deposit information from scanned documents.


Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Reconciling tax payments and returns to ensure accurate application of payments.
  • Receiving batches of source documents in either hard copy or scanned image format.
  • Accessing the appropriate data capture screen based on the type of source document and tax type.
  • Determining the correct line placement for data on forms lacking a dedicated formatted keying screen.
  • Identifying incorrect or missing data in fields and correcting information from scanned images misread by imaging equipment.
  • Detecting calculation errors and making necessary corrections, including calculating and inserting totals into relevant fields and determining appropriate tax periods.
  • Performing additional related tasks as directed by the Unit supervisor(s).

This role is part of a Career Progression Group (CPG) and may be filled as a Revenue Tax Analyst 1 or 2 based on the qualifications of the selected candidate.

Applicants qualifying through college training or possession of a baccalaureate degree must submit an official college transcript to verify claimed credentials prior to appointment.

POSITION CLASSIFICATION:

Current permanent status classified state employees may be required to accept a Probational appointment if selected.

All selected applicants will undergo a Tax and Natural Disaster Clearance to verify timely submission of tax returns and payments.

Compliance with all tax laws of the State of Louisiana is mandatory for all Revenue employees.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
One year of experience where clerical work was a primary responsibility.

SUBSTITUTIONS:


Training in a business or clerical-related curriculum from a business school or technical institute may substitute for the required experience.

Completion of a business or clerical-related curriculum will substitute for the required one year of experience.

College training may substitute for the required experience on the basis of 15 semester hours for six months of experience.


NOTE:
Any college hours or degrees must be from an accredited institution recognized by the appropriate regional accrediting bodies.


FUNCTION OF WORK:
To assist taxpayers by analyzing, adjusting, collecting payments, and resolving discrepancies related to tax due notices.


LEVEL OF WORK:
Entry-level position.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Close supervision from Revenue Tax Analyst Supervisor or higher-level personnel.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
None.

LOCATION OF WORK:
Department of Revenue.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
This position differs from Revenue Tax Analyst 2 by the absence of experienced-level duties. Responsibilities include assisting taxpayers in preparing tax forms, returns, and registration forms; responding to inquiries regarding such matters.

Determining the validity and accuracy of assessed tax liabilities by reviewing forms, documents, and payments for compliance with tax laws.

Contacting taxpayers to clarify and obtain information; informing them of tax account status, legal rights, and obligations, and computing penalties and interest.

Determining appropriate collection actions based on account history and taxpayer responses.

Initiating billings on accounts not complying with filing requirements by calculating and assessing tax amounts.

Preparing reports on sales of cigarette tax stamps to authorized wholesale tobacco dealers.
