Position Overview:

UPMC Altoona is seeking a dedicated Staff Nurse to enhance the operations of the Birth Center.

About UPMC Magee Women's Birthing Center (T9): T9 is a specialized 22-bed unit that includes its own triage and surgical facilities. Patients experience labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum care in a single location, ensuring seamless patient care throughout their hospital experience. This approach promotes essential practices such as skin-to-skin contact, breastfeeding support, delayed bathing, and infant rooming-in. The unit features a 4-bed triage area for maternal monitoring and urgent obstetrical evaluations. Nurses are trained in various aspects of labor and delivery, including OR circulation for cesarean sections, postpartum care for mothers and infants, patient triage, and neonatal resuscitation.

  • Competitive compensation:
  • $29.50 (BSN)
  • $28.00 (non-BSN)
  • Shift differential: $2.00
  • Salary and title determined by education and nursing experience.
  • Generous Sign-On Bonus of up to $15,000.
  • $15,000 sign-on bonus available for nurses with 1 or more years of experience.
  • Commitment to a two-year work period for sign-on bonus eligible roles.
  • Monthly Loan Repayment program: Eligible Graduate Nurses may receive a $15,000 student loan repayment bonus, distributed over three years.

As a vital member of this healthcare team, you will deliver both direct and indirect patient care utilizing the nursing process. You will also take on a leadership role within the nursing team and contribute to the education of various staff members and students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implementation:
  • Adhere to nursing care protocols and standards.
  • Execute and document procedures in accordance with Hospital Policy.
  • Perform technical skills safely and accurately, demonstrating proficiency with equipment.
  • Transcribe and implement physicians' orders appropriately.
  • Exhibit knowledge of the physiological basis for nursing care delivery.
  • Administer medications and IV therapy according to established policy.
  • Initiate and coordinate health education for patients and families based on individual needs.
  • Collaborate with medical staff and other professionals to address patient care challenges, resulting in jointly developed care plans.
  • Utilize Bed Management System, Alpha, CPOE, and other computer systems effectively.
  • Assessment:
  • Evaluate patient and family needs, documenting this information accurately.
  • Reassess patients every eight hours, or as needed.
  • Planning:
  • Involve patients and families in the care plan formulation.
  • Prioritize patient needs effectively.
  • Organize and document patient care conferences.
  • Maintain an updated care plan for each assigned patient.
  • Engage appropriate community agencies and healthcare professionals in care planning.
  • Evaluation:
  • Adjust care plans as necessary based on daily patient evaluations.
  • Assess patient outcomes against established goals.
  • Document patient responses to care, education, and treatment.
  • Adhere to universal precautions and identify potential issues, initiating appropriate measures.
  • Comply with occupational exposure policies.
  • Complete annual competency validation activities.
  • Maintain proficiency in point-of-care testing as per laboratory evaluation criteria.
  • Exhibit professionalism in patient care delivery.
  • Serve as a consultant to other healthcare team members.
  • Education and Training Requirements:
  • Must possess a current nursing license in Pennsylvania; completion of the Nursing Department's orientation program and probationary period is required.
  • Completion of NIHSS education prior to the end of the orientation period, if applicable.
  • For LDRP assignments: One year of hospital/LDRP-Nursery experience preferred.
  • ACLS and Neonatal Resuscitation certifications preferred or must be obtained within 12 months.
  • BLS certification required.
  • Completion of the Fetal Monitoring Course is necessary.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards, including both didactic and skills demonstration components within 30 days of hire.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal

*Current licensure must be in the state where the facility is located or, if applicable, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state.
