Position Overview

The State of Vermont is looking for a dedicated Highway Maintenance Operations Specialist II. This role involves a variety of responsibilities associated with the upkeep of roadways, including tasks such as repairing safety barriers, clearing vegetation, patching asphalt, collecting litter, and performing drainage work. During winter months, this position will also participate in snow removal and salting operations, with the possibility of required overtime. Furthermore, there may be opportunities to assist with the maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

Work Environment

The role requires the ability to endure exposure to various outdoor weather conditions. Employees must be available for significant overtime during heavy snowfall or emergencies. There may be a need to report to work outside of regular hours and be reachable by phone. Employees should be capable of using tools and lifting materials commonly associated with maintenance work. Hazards associated with working near heavy machinery, hazardous materials, and roadside debris are present. There may also be exposure to blood or airborne pathogens. Safety risks are inherent when working on roads with active traffic. Participation in a random drug and alcohol testing program is mandatory. Overtime work, especially during winter, is a condition of employment.

Qualifications

Applicants should have at least one year of experience in construction, equipment operation, or related manual labor, which includes either one season of operating a snowplow with wings or six months of experience operating medium or heavy equipment such as graders, excavators, and backhoes.
Alternatively, successful completion of original probation as a Highway Maintenance Operations Specialist I and possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement is acceptable.

Preferred Qualifications

A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.

Special Requirements

A Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is mandatory.
Employees must reside within a reasonable distance from their assigned workstation.
Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement is required within the first six months of employment.
All required coursework must be completed within one year or the employee must be enrolled.
Note: Non-original probationary employees must obtain the required CDL license within six months of service in the position.
