Job Summary

The Customer Service Specialist I is a key member of our team at 61st Street Service Corporation, responsible for delivering exceptional customer service to patients, insurance carriers, and physician offices.

We are seeking a highly motivated and organized individual to join our team in Fort Lee, NJ. As a Customer Service Specialist I, you will be responsible for handling and resolving incoming phone calls, collecting outstanding patient balances, and updating patient and guarantor accounts with new demographic and insurance coverage information.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Handle large volumes of calls and perform work in a timely manner.
  2. Collect full payment from patients or guarantors in a professional and courteous manner.
  3. Establish payment arrangements and document terms in the billing system.
  4. Apply payments collected over the phone to each date of service.
  5. Handle customer inquiries, disputes, and complaints in a professional and courteous manner.
  6. Provide timely and accurate responses to customer inquiries.
  7. Obtain and update patient and guarantor information, as well as bill third-party payers as necessary.
  8. Meet productivity and quality targets.
  9. Follow communication procedures, guidelines, and policies.
  10. Document all interactions and follow-up steps in the system.
Requirements
  • High school graduate or GED certificate required.
  • Minimum 6 months experience in a physician billing or third-party payer environment.
  • Strong customer service and patient-focused orientation.
  • Effective communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Functional proficiency in computer software skills, including Microsoft Office and email.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Patient financial and practice management system experience in Epic or other electronic billing systems.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Previous call center experience.
  • Previous claims experience.
  • Previous experience in an academic healthcare setting.
