Compensation: $32.06 IUOE Union

The Motor Vehicle Mechanic is responsible for the repair, reconstruction, or complete overhaul of significant components of internal combustion vehicles, including cars, buses, trucks, and tractors. Responsibilities typically include diagnosing issues, assessing repair needs, replacing worn or damaged components such as piston rings and bearings, grinding and adjusting valves, rebuilding carburetors, overhauling transmissions, and repairing fuel injection, lighting, and ignition systems. This role necessitates comprehensive training and experience, often obtained through formal apprenticeship programs or equivalent experiences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensures equipment readiness by inspecting and testing vehicles; performing preventive maintenance tasks such as engine tune-ups, oil changes, tire rotations, and filter replacements.
  • Maintains vehicle functionality by addressing operator concerns; conducting inspections; repairing engine malfunctions; fixing mechanical and electrical system issues; replacing parts; and addressing body damage.
  • Confirms vehicle serviceability through test drives and adjustments to controls and systems.
  • Adheres to state vehicle regulations by testing engine performance, safety, and emissions standards.
  • Enhances vehicle appearance through cleaning, washing, and painting.
  • Documents vehicle maintenance by recording services and repairs.
  • Ensures shop equipment operates efficiently by following operational guidelines; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining inventory; and performing preventive maintenance.
  • Maintains supply readiness by managing stock levels; placing orders; and verifying deliveries.
  • Enhances job knowledge through participation in educational opportunities and reviewing technical literature.
  • Completes maintenance and organizational objectives by achieving related outcomes as necessary.

Additional Responsibilities:

Handles GSA requests for repair approvals. Submits purchase requisitions to material expeditors. Operates shop equipment safely. Performs other duties as assigned.

Attendance Requirements:

  • Work schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with potential weekend shifts for sign-offs, 100%
  • Shift: Day shift
  • Regular attendance: Critical, 100%
  • Punctuality: Critical, 100%
  • Standard work hours: 8 hours per day, 5 days per week, Monday-Friday. Regular attendance and punctuality are essential. Flexibility in workdays is necessary to accommodate weekend repair needs.

Other Essential Functions:

Must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening, health performance evaluation, and background check. Must exhibit professional conduct at all times when interacting with customers, management, and colleagues. Clear and effective communication skills in English, both verbal and written, are required. Appropriate grooming and attire are necessary for the position and must not pose safety risks. A positive work environment must be maintained through professional behavior and communication. Reliable personal transportation to the work site is essential.
