The Wistar Institute is seeking an Environmental Health and Safety Manager to join our Laboratory Operations and EHS department. This role will be responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing the Institute's EHS programs in compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
Key Responsibilities- Work with the Institute Biosafety Officer to ensure biosafety, chemical hygiene, and occupational health best practices are defined and implemented.
- Implement and update the Chemical Hygiene Program, manage SAAs and institutional chemical inventory.
- Conduct ergonomic assessments and provide recommendations for improvement.
- Liaise with University of Pennsylvania Occupational Health department regarding blood donor screening tests as needed.
- Assist with Industrial Hygiene Program for workplace hazards, including chemical exposure monitoring, biological and physical hazards.
- Ensure that emergency shower stations, eyewash stations, and chemical fume hoods are tested annually.
- Work with Human Resources Department to ensure OSHA record keeping, training, and reporting requirements are met.
- Conduct accident investigations to determine root causes and provide recommendations for corrective and preventive actions.
- Manage occupational health program requirements for employees and maintain records in coordination with occupational health provider.
- Respond to chemical spills, odor complaints, and conduct comprehensive accident investigations as needed.
- Conduct walk-throughs of labs and other workplace areas to assess compliance of safety policies and regulations and identify existing and potential accident and health hazards.
- Record and maintain files of lab inspection reports and clearance letters for fit testing.
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health/Environmental Science or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of five years of safety experience, preferably at an academic biomedical research institution or university.
- Supervisory experience is preferred.
