Position Overview

The Texas Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled Bridge Supervisor to lead the Dallas District Bridge team, which comprises over 20 specialized bridge professionals. This role involves managing the most extensive bridge portfolio in the state, encompassing more than 8,000 structures both on and off the system. The Bridge Supervisor will direct our bridge inspection team, in-house design, and geotechnical engineering units. Additionally, the position will supervise consultant-led bridge design efforts and review shop drawings for the district. The Bridge Supervisor will serve as a key resource for all bridge-related matters and act as a subject matter expert for structural decisions.

Salary Grade/Range: B29: $97,010 - $164,069

Job Responsibilities

The Bridge Supervisor will oversee personnel engaged in transportation engineering across various functions, including planning, design, construction, operations, maintenance, and bridge inspections. This role ensures adherence to relevant federal and state regulations, policies, and standards. The position requires interaction with government officials, private entities, and contractors. Employees in this role are expected to be self-sufficient and accountable for their work outputs.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Address technical and policy inquiries related to bridge inspections and maintain comprehensive inspection data; analyze and summarize findings.
  • Maintain a prioritized list of critical bridges and collaborate with the Bridge Division and district staff on urgent issues affecting state-maintained bridges.
  • Conduct and oversee structural evaluations and inspections of bridges with specific condition ratings or those recommended for closure.
  • Engage in district plan review processes.
  • Advise on the replacement, rehabilitation, or repair of damaged bridges and coordinate with local authorities on urgent structural issues.
  • Represent the department at relevant meetings and conferences.
  • Manage district bridge design responsibilities.
  • Review and develop complex plans, specifications, estimates, and contracts, ensuring compliance with established standards.
  • Schedule and supervise bridge inspection activities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a related field recognized by TX PELS.

Experience: Minimum of 4 years in transportation engineering, with supervisory experience preferred. Related graduate education may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Valid driver's license required for operating state vehicles.
  • Professional Engineer License is preferred.
Competencies:
  • Knowledge of transportation design engineering principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with standards for bridges and transportation structures.
  • Understanding of bridge construction and evaluation methods.
  • Proficiency in structural engineering terminology and practices.
  • Ability to set objectives and manage technical staff effectively.
Work Environment:
  • Primarily office-based, with occasional fieldwork for bridge inspections, including emergency situations.
Employment Conditions:
