POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Practical Nursing Specialist is tasked with delivering direct nursing services to residents while overseeing the daily nursing operations carried out by nursing aides.

This oversight must align with the prevailing federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations governing our facility, as well as directives from the Director of Nursing to ensure the utmost quality of care is consistently upheld.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervise the daily activities of nursing aides. Collaborate with assigned nursing staff and support personnel to strategize the shift's services, programs, and activities. Prepare written and verbal reports/recommendations regarding shift activities as necessary. Manage the admission, transfer, and discharge processes for residents as required. Provide guidance to nursing staff assigned to your unit/shift.
Complete and maintain necessary record-keeping forms/charts upon the admission, transfer, and/or discharge of residents. Receive and transcribe telephone orders from physicians, documenting them on the Physician's Order Form.

Document nursing notes in a clear and descriptive manner that accurately reflects the care provided to residents and their responses to such care.

Complete and submit accident/incident reports to the Director as required. Perform routine charting duties in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Prepare and administer medications as prescribed by the physician.

Foster and maintain effective working relationships with inter-departmental personnel and other departments within the facility to ensure that nursing services and activities meet the needs of residents.

Establish and maintain an environment of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis, along with a calm atmosphere throughout the unit and shift.

Exchange nursing reports at the beginning and end of shift duty hours. Accompany physicians on rounds as necessary.

PROFESSIONAL SERVICES INCLUDE:

catheterization, tube feedings, suctioning, applying and changing dressings/bandages, managing colostomy and drainage bags, performing blood draws, administering massages, and conducting range of motion exercises, as required.

Monitor assigned personnel to ensure compliance with established safety regulations regarding equipment and supplies.

Maintain confidentiality of all resident care information, including protected health information. Report any known or suspected incidents of unauthorized disclosure of such information.

Ensure that all nursing care is delivered in privacy and that nursing staff knock before entering residents' rooms.

Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
To successfully fulfill this role, an individual must be capable of performing each essential duty satisfactorily. The following requirements represent the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities necessary for this position.

Licensed Practical Nurse with a current unencumbered state license.
Proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding the English language is essential.
Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action is required.

Knowledge of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines relevant to nursing care facilities, is necessary.

Current CPR Certification is mandatory.
Experience in Long Term Care is preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
