Job Summary

The Director of Risk Management and Compliance will oversee the daily operations of the risk management department, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective services across the continuum of care. This role will assess and identify current and potential risks affecting patient safety and fiscal operations, ensuring compliance with applicable local, state, federal rules, regulations, and security standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the day-to-day operation of the department and risk management prevention and control program, following guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Partner with senior leadership and other key stakeholders to define the strategic direction and operational plan for advancing risk management programs.
  • Develop and implement quality assurance programs and related services, establishing program and service goals and priorities.
  • Conduct ongoing review of existing policies and standard operating procedures to identify gaps or discrepancies and implement revisions.
  • Oversee various committees, assessing and predicting changes in risk, and conducting research and studies to identify and analyze trends in risk.
  • Compile, review, and interpret risk data, presenting key findings to various committees and other stakeholders, and creating strategies and recommendations for interventions and control measures.
  • Serve as a principal advisor and key resource to senior leadership and other parties, and as liaison between appropriate agencies, on all matters pertaining to patient and public safety, risk assessment, and other factors relating to security excellence.
  • Investigate accidents and incidents involving safety matters, promptly reporting to the appropriate local, state, and federal public health and regulatory agencies.
  • Partner with senior leadership to develop and maintain alert monitoring and reporting procedures, and create strategies and action plans to address potential risks, reduce the likelihood of these risks, and lessen the impact of risks if/when they occur.
  • Prepare and/or actively participate in the development of the fiscal year expense, revenue, and operating budgets, ensuring operations run within budgetary guidelines.
  • Collaborate with appropriate parties to identify organizational needs, monitor staff and resource utilization, and make adjustments required to ensure that initiatives and staff are supported with appropriate resources.
  • Assist in the development of training programs and provide orientation, training, and guidance to staff, routinely assessing staff learning needs and identifying gaps and evaluating the quality and effectiveness of the programs.
  • Provide education and information on patient and public safety protocols and prevention techniques to clinical and non-clinical staff, community members, patients, and caregivers.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance and maintenance of the NYC Health+ Hospitals policies and procedures with national standards and other applicable external regulatory requirements, guidelines, and accreditation authorities, as well as safety and quality management standards.
  • Participate in internal/external quality assurance/performance improvement (QA/PI) activities, programs, and training, as required.

Requirements

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Risk Management, Health Administration, Business Administration, or a related healthcare specialization, and three (3) years of experience in risk management, control, and prevention, leading and implementing quality and risk management programs, managing and analyzing risk data, and performing other functions related to risk management in a hospital or a healthcare setting, one (1) year of which must have been in a responsible administrative, managerial, or supervisory capacity.
  • Or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in fields as described above, and four (4) years of risk management experience, as described above, two (2) years of which must have been in a responsible administrative, managerial, or supervisory capacity.
  • Or Bachelor's degree in the disciplines as described above, and two (2) years of clinical, patient care, or equivalent experience in a hospital or healthcare setting, plus two (2) years of related experience, as listed above, one (1) year of which must have been in a responsible administrative, managerial, or supervisory capacity.
  • Or a satisfactory equivalent of education, training, and/or experience. Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) or current license and registration to practice as a Professional Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, or other similar clinical designation, may be substituted for one (1) year of experience, however, all incumbents must have at least a bachelor's degree and one (1) year of responsible administrative, managerial, or supervisory experience, as described above.
