Overview:

Pharmacy Technicians play a vital role in supporting Clinical Pharmacists by delivering pharmacy services with care, professionalism, and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:


• Adheres to the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.

• Must be at least 18 years of age.

Operational Duties:

• Executes only non-judgmental technical tasks under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist.

• Processes medication orders as per physician requests, following established guidelines and protocols. Ensures accurate verification of computerized patient medication records and maintains comprehensive patient drug records. Compounds non-sterile pharmaceuticals and delivers services promptly and efficiently.

• Dispenses controlled substances to designated patient care areas while maintaining compliance with legal and institutional regulations.

• Confirms that daily departmental activities are completed and documented.

• Upholds the necessary competencies for the current job title/position.

• Maintains an active technician license and ensures that continuing education records are kept up to date in departmental files. Participates in staff meetings.

• Completes all required competency and skills assessments.

• Specialty Areas - Functions as the technician in specialized settings such as operating rooms or pharmacy areas outside the central pharmacy.

• Ambulatory Care - Delivers ambulatory pharmaceutical care services as assigned, including but not limited to anticoagulation clinics, intensive medical homes, and discharge medication reconciliation.

• Retail - Conducts outpatient distribution tasks related to entering prescription orders, selecting appropriate medications for new and refill prescriptions, and coordinating medication delivery for patient pick-up or home delivery.

Clinical Duties:

• Ensures safe, appropriate, and cost-effective medication therapies for patients in accordance with established policies and procedures.

• Accurately reads, extracts, and interprets information from patient medical records.

• Identifies and reports suspected adverse drug reactions promptly and accurately.

• Coordinates pharmacist-led drug education for patients and their families following institutional protocols.

• Engages in quality improvement and medication use review activities within the department. Collects data, conducts monitoring and inspections, and maintains logs and records as assigned.

• Provides services efficiently and in a timely manner.

Occupational Hazards:

• Potential exposure to hazardous substances, including chemotherapeutic and cytotoxic drugs, as well as cleaning agents. Risk of injury from needles and other sharp instruments.

• Risk category 0 exposure.

• Potential for musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting techniques are not utilized.

• Possible exposure to biological materials during direct patient care activities (e.g., patient education, code attendance).

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Prior pharmacy experience is preferred.
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician in the State of practice is required.
  • Certification as a pharmacy technician is preferred.
