Overview:
Pharmacy Technicians play a vital role in supporting Clinical Pharmacists by delivering pharmacy services with care, precision, and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
• Adheres to the OneCHRISTUS Competencies, demonstrating leadership qualities as a self-leader, leader of others, or leader of leaders.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
Operational Duties:
• Pharmacy Technicians execute only non-judgmental technical tasks under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
• Accurately prepares medication orders as per physician requests, following established protocols and procedures. Maintains comprehensive and precise patient medication records. Compounds non-sterile pharmaceuticals and ensures timely service delivery.
• Distributes controlled substances to designated patient care areas and keeps records in compliance with legal and institutional requirements.
• Confirms that all departmental activities are completed and documented daily.
• Maintains the necessary competencies for the current position.
• Holds a current technician license and ensures that continuing education records are kept up to date in departmental files. Participates in staff meetings.
• Completes all required competency and skills assessments.
• Specialty Areas - Functions as the technician in specialized areas such as operating rooms or pharmacy settings outside the central pharmacy.
• Ambulatory Care - Delivers ambulatory pharmaceutical care services as assigned, including but not limited to anticoagulation clinics, intensive medical homes, and discharge medication reconciliation.
• Retail - Conducts outpatient distribution tasks, including entering prescription orders, selecting appropriate medications for new and refill prescriptions, and coordinating medication delivery for patient pickup or delivery.
Clinical Duties:
• Ensures safe, effective, and economical drug therapies for patients in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• Accurately reads, extracts, and interprets information from patient medical records.
• Identifies and reports suspected adverse drug reactions promptly and accurately.
• Coordinates drug education for patients and their families following institutional protocols.
• Engages in quality improvement and medication use review activities within the department. Collects data, conducts monitoring and inspections, and maintains necessary logs and records as assigned.
• Provides services efficiently and promptly.
Occupational Hazards:
• Potential exposure to hazardous and toxic substances, including chemotherapeutic and cytotoxic drugs, as well as cleaning solutions.
• Risk of exposure category 0.
• Potential for musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting techniques are not employed.
• Possible exposure to biological materials during direct patient care activities (e.g., patient education, code attendance).
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- Previous pharmacy experience is preferred.
- Registered Pharmacy Technician in the state of practice is required.
- Certification as a pharmacy technician is preferred.
