Overview:

Pharmacy Technicians operate under the guidance of Clinical Pharmacists to deliver pharmaceutical services with dedication, quality, and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

• Must be at least 18 years of age.

Operational Duties and Responsibilities

• Pharmacy Technicians are responsible for performing only non-judgmental technical tasks under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist.

• Prepares medication orders as per physician directives in accordance with established protocols, ensuring accurate verification of computerized patient medication records. Maintains a precise and complete patient drug record. Compounds non-sterile pharmaceuticals and delivers services promptly and efficiently.

• Distributes controlled substances to patient care areas while maintaining records as mandated by law and institutional policies.

• Ensures that daily departmental activities are completed and documented.

• Maintains the required competencies for the current job title/position.

• Keeps current technician license and ensures that continuing education records and licensure are properly filed in departmental records. Participates in staff meetings.

• Completes all required competency and skills assessments.

• Specialty area - Acts as the technician in specialized areas such as the operating room or pharmacy work areas outside the central pharmacy.

• Ambulatory care - Provides assigned ambulatory pharmaceutical care services, including but not limited to anticoagulation clinics, intensive medical home, transition of care, and discharge medication reconciliation.

• Retail - Executes outpatient distribution functions related to processing prescription orders, selecting appropriate medications for new and refill prescriptions, and coordinating medication delivery for patient pickup or delivery.

Clinical Duties and Responsibilities

• Ensures safe, appropriate, and cost-effective drug therapies for patients in accordance with established policies and protocols.

• Accurately reads, extracts, and interprets information from patient medical records.

• Identifies and reports suspected adverse drug reactions in a timely manner.

• Coordinates pharmacist-led drug education for patients and their families as per institutional guidelines.

• Engages in quality improvement and medication use review activities within the department. Collects data, conducts monitoring and inspections, and maintains logs and records as assigned.

• Provides services efficiently and in a timely manner.

Occupational Hazards

• Potential exposure to hazardous and toxic substances (including chemotherapeutic and cytotoxic drugs, as well as cleaning solutions), and risks of injury from needles and other sharp instruments.

• Risk level 0 exposure category.

• Possibility of musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting and carrying techniques are not utilized.

• Potential exposure to biological materials when engaging in direct patient care activities (e.g., patient education, code attendance).

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Previous pharmacy experience is preferred.
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician in the State of practice is required.
  • Certification as a pharmacy technician is preferred.
