POSITION TITLE: Pesticide Program Specialist

ABOUT THE XERCES SOCIETY: We are a dedicated team of conservation professionals focused on safeguarding vital invertebrate species. These organisms are crucial for the pollination of many flowering plants and play significant roles in pest management and as food sources for various wildlife. Unfortunately, their populations are often threatened by human activities and are frequently overlooked in traditional conservation efforts.

At Xerces, we leverage scientific knowledge and public enthusiasm to implement effective conservation strategies. Our initiatives include assisting agricultural and public entities in developing conservation plans, producing influential publications on insect conservation, and educating a wide audience on habitat management for beneficial insects.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Pesticide Program Specialist will report to the Pesticide Program Director and will be responsible for advocating policies that safeguard invertebrates and enhance environmental health concerning pesticide use. This role will primarily focus on urban areas, engaging with local and state authorities, and occasionally federal entities.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the enactment of local and state policies aimed at minimizing the environmental impacts of pesticide use.
  • Collaborating with local affiliates to ensure effective pest management policies are in place.
  • Working alongside Xerces staff and local decision-makers to develop strategies that promote environmentally responsible pesticide practices.
  • Evaluating existing regulations and procedures to identify opportunities for policy improvements.
  • Staying informed on scientific advancements related to pesticides and their effects on invertebrates.
  • Participating in public hearings and comment periods to influence policy decisions.
  • Creating and distributing educational materials related to pesticide use and its impacts.
  • Designing and facilitating workshops and training sessions.
  • Maintaining regular communication with the Pesticide Program Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:

ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

  • Understanding of the risks posed by pesticides to invertebrates and environmental health.
  • Familiarity with federal pesticide regulations.
  • Experience in grassroots lobbying, policy engagement, or related fields.
  • Ability to analyze scientific research and apply findings to policy reform.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey complex information to diverse audiences.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Knowledge of pollinator ecology and integrated pest management practices.
  • Experience in using social media for advocacy and engagement.
  • Graphic design skills for creating informative materials.
  • Bilingual or multilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND:

REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field with a minimum of two years of experience.
  • Valid driver's license and eligibility for corporate liability insurance.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.

PREFERRED:

  • Master's degree in a relevant field with additional experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This is a full-time, salaried position with a standard workweek of approximately 40 hours.
